Oscars In Memoriam: Eddie Vedder Pays Tribute to Harry Dean Stanton, Roger Moore, Jerry Lewis

The past year saw the death of many notable entertainment figures, particularly in the music business. For this year’s Oscars In Memoriam segment, Eddie Vedder sang Tom Petty’s “Room at the Top” by Tom Petty, who died in October.

Jerry Lewis came last in the segment, traditionally the space where the biggest star is honored.

“Silence of the Lambs” director Jonathan Demme as well as “Rocky” director John G. Avildsen, “Night of the Living Dead” director George Romero were among the filmmakers who died in the past year.

Notable late movie stars who were included Roger Moore, Martin Landau, Harry Dean Stanton, Sam Shepard, Jeanne Moreau and John Heard.

Performer Glenne Headly, Rance Howard, Miriam Colon, Don Rickles, Danielle Darrieux, Hiep Thi Le, who starred in “Heaven and Earth,” and Joseph Bologna were also remembered in the Oscars In Memoriam segment. Indian entertainers Sridevi and Shashi Kapoor were among the international showbizzers who the Academy honored, along with African filmmaker Idrissa Ouedrago.

Executives and producers who were remembered included Brad Gray, Allison Shearmur, Martin Ransohoff and Jill Messick, Rose McGowan’s former manager.

Rock ‘n’ roll pioneer Chuck Berry was also honored.

Among the Academy’s omissions: David Ogden Stiers, who appeared in films including “Better Off Dead” and several Woody Allen films, and died on Saturday, the day before the Oscars.

Viewers also pointed out that “Touched By An Angel” star Della Reese, Robert Guillaume and Dick Gregory were not acknowledged. Some viewers thought Bill Paxton had been omitted, but in fact he died just before last year’s ceremony and was added at the last minute.

Among the other omissions: Oscar-winning actress Dorothy Malone, as well as actors Powers Boothe, Adam West and John Mahoney, “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” director Tobe Hooper and musicians including Chris Cornell.
