‘Paddington in Peru’ trailer: Head to the cupboard and open a new jar of marmalade [Watch]
Bust out the marmalade. Director Dougal Wilson, taking over for Paul King, unveiled the trailer for “Paddington in Peru,” the third entry in the wildly popular live-action-animation hybrid at a special event in London on Wednesday.
This new one brings back Ben Whishaw as the voice of the ursine hero, with Hugh Bonneville returning as the bear’s London father figure Mr. Brown. (Emily Mortimer has taken the reins for the part of Mrs. Brown, with Sally Hawkins apparently saying enough’s enough after two of these movies. Hawkins was in Paul King’s “Wonka” just last year, so maybe she is just super loyal to him as a director, who knows?)

New to the cast is Antonio Banderas as a swashbuckling sea captain and Oscar-winner Olivia Colman as a nun. Anyway, the Brown family heads to his native land of Peru (as per the title) ostensibly to visit Paddington’s Aunt Lucy at the Home for Retired Bears. But when they get there they discover she’s gone on some kind of walkabout, and have to go into the jungle to find her. Hijinks ensue.
The “Paddington” series has a worldwide gross of $500 million and made a serious imprint on wider culture. Queen Elizabeth sat with Paddington for tea during her Platinum Jubilee in 2022, proving that she had a progressive stance toward immigration. The Nicolas Cage–Pedro Pascal film “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” also has an extended bit showing how these two tough guys believe that “Paddington 2” is the greatest movie ever made.
The character, named after a famous railway station in London, is based on a series of books by author Michael Bond dating back to the 1950s. A bronze sculpture of the bear was built in the station in 2000.
“Paddington 3” will be out in the UK this November, and in the US on January 17, 2025.
