‘Palm Royale’ is packed full of Emmy favorites

Apple TV+ has a lush new series, “Palm Royale,” that is as beautiful to watch as its all-star cast, led by Kristen Wiig, Carol Burnett, Allison Janney and Laura Dern. Abe Sylvia adapted Juliet McDaniel‘s novel “Mr. and Mrs. American Pie.” This period piece set in 1969. is centered on Wiig as an outsider trying to gain a place in Palm Beach’s high society. The vistas are all pretty to look at while the petty politicking keeps things zipping along. Critics have hailed this  clever comedy.

André Hereford (Metro Weekly) noted: “‘Palm Royale’ revs up the comedy slowly but ultimately hits cruising speed as a gleefully campy spin on nighttime soaps.”

Joey Moser (Awards Daily) observed: “Supported by a game, limber cast, ‘Palm Royale’ is a cheeky, gorgeous tale of ambition and identity led by a never-better Wiig.”

Lili Loofbourow (Washington Post) declared: “At its best, when it leans into the caricature it sometimes seems to be going for, the show can approximate the verbal pleasures and visual delights of a Coen brothers comedy.”

Olly Richards (Empire) called it: “A deft mix of social commentary and campy social climbing, ‘Palm Royale’ is one of the year’s smarter comedies and a great vehicle for Kristen Wiig.”

Matthew Creith (The Wrap) summarized: “Palm Royale is a feast of retro stylings and historical events, building a world of a privileged class set against the backdrop of the Nixon administration and Vietnam.”

As a result of these rave reviews, we are predicting that “Palm Royale” will be nominated for Best Comedy Series alongside “The Bear,” “Abbott Elementary,” “Only Murders in the Building,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “What We Do in the Shadows,” and “Reservation Dogs.” And there are lots of reasons to think that “Palm Royale” will indeed secure its place in this lineup.

Firstly, the A-list cast is absolutely stacked. Dern’s father, the legendary Bruce Dern, also appears — as do Leslie Bibb and Ricky Martin. Plenty of comedy series with equally impressive casts have often wound up nominated for Best Comedy Series, including “Only Murders in the Building,” “The Kominsky Method,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” and “30 Rock.”

Plus, Wiig, Dern, Burnett, and Janney are all Emmy favorites. Wiig has nine nominations to her name; Dern has eight bids and one win; Janney has 15 nominations and seven victories; and Burnett has a whopping 23 nominations and seven wins. This collective awards prowess will no doubt entice voters to this show. When the ingredients are this good, the final result is irresistible. And that may prove to be the case for Emmy voters.

The show itself will also be attractive to Emmy voters. Exquisitely crafted period comedies tend to do well in this category. Recent such nominees “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “GLOW.”

The fact that “Palm Royale” is an Apple TV+ production also helps. The streamer knows how to secure these nominations. “Ted Lasso” won two awards for Best Comedy Series while “Severance” was nominated for Best Drama Series and “Shrinking,” “Bad Sisters,” “Black Bird,” and “The Morning Show” all contended in key categories, including acting, directing, and writing.
