Paul McCartney Surprises With Andrew Watt, Chad Smith
When he’s not on tour or in the studio, 82-year-old Paul McCartney can often be found relaxing in glitzy New York beach enclave the Hamptons, where he’s owned a home for decades.
Last night (Aug. 20), the Beatles legend didn’t have to travel far to make a surprise onstage appearance at the tiny Amagansett venue Stephen Talkhouse during a show by friend and producer Andrew Watt and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, singing raucous versions of Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World” and the Beatles’ “I Saw Her Standing There” amid shrieks of delight from the crowd.

Watt and Smith were joined by longtime session guitarist and Saturday Night Live band member G.E. Smith as well as a horn section. Watt’s girlfriend Charlotte Lawrence also got in on the fun and grabbed a mic to sing with McCartney during “Rockin’ in the Free World.”
Watt will reportedly be involved in an upcoming McCartney album project, although details remain scant. The pair previously worked together on the Rolling Stones’ album Hackney Diamonds, which Watt produced and for which McCartney guested on the song “Bite My Head Off.”
McCartney will return to the road Oct. 1 in Montevideo, Uruguay, and will tour South America through mid-November. A run of European and U.K. shows begins Dec. 4 in Paris and wraps Dec. 18-19 at the O2 in London.
