Paul Thomas Anderson’s Next Movie to Open August 2025 in IMAX
Paul Thomas Anderson’s next film doesn’t yet have a title, but it does have a release date, and it will even open in IMAX theaters.
Warner Bros. has dated the untitled PTA movie for a release on August 8, 2025. The movie officially stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, Wood Harris, Alana Haim, and Chase Infiniti.

Anderson is writing, directing, and producing the film, now his 10th narrative feature, with Sara Murphy and Adam Somner also producing.
Warner Bros. is calling PTA’s next movie an “event film,” and its release plans on IMAX are a coup for the director and the studio. Little else is known about it, as Anderson loves working in secrecy, but the film is said to be contemporary in its setting, and it’s felt to be his most “commercial” project to date. The film is currently in production in California.
The date is also wide open on the 2025 release calendar, with only an unannounced Disney movie currently in that slot. (UPDATE: The untitled Disney film has moved to October 10, 2025)
While this is DiCaprio’s first time working with Anderson, his latest is a “Licorice Pizza” reunion in several ways. It reunites him with that film’s breakout Alana Haim, as well as Penn, who portrayed a riff on a William Holden-type character. And it also reunites him with Warner Bros. Pictures film chiefs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, the film heads who shepherded the release of that film at MGM back in 2021. De Luca previously produced “Boogie Nights” when he was at New Line.
“Licorice Pizza” returned Anderson to his southern California roots and was a critical darling that scored three Oscar nominations, but the film struggled at the box office and brought in only $33.2 million worldwide for the ambitious period drama.
Other release date changes Warner Bros. announced include the studio shifting the date for “Alto Knights,” which is directed by Barry Levinson and stars Robert De Niro. That film now opens March 21, 2025, delayed from a planned release this November. “The Batman 2” has been delayed a full year to October 2026, and taking its spot in October 2025 is Maggie Gyllenhaal’s “The Bride!”
