Why Did Paula Abdul Cancel Her Tour?

On September 4, Abdul took to Instagram to share the news. Clearly devastated about needing to cancel her tour dates, she provided the details and promised to return to the stage soon.

The legendary singer, dancer and former American Idol judge recently finished the Magic Summer tour with New Kids on the Block and was about to start her own Straight Up! To Canada Tour, starting with three nights at the Hollywood Bowl with Boyz II Men. Abdul was set to tour with Taylor Dane and Tiffany on various dates in the U.S. and Canada.

“It’s with an incredibly heavy heart that I need to share with you an update regarding some injuries I’ve recently sustained. In an effort to keep going, I’ve received targeted injections that will allow me temporary relief, but the demands of an entire tour is a different story,” Abdul wrote.

She continued, “After multiple consultations with my doctors and exploring all available options, I’ve been advised that one of my injuries requires a minor procedure followed by a 6-8 week recovery time, therefore it will prohibit me from proceeding with the Straight Up! To Canada Tour as well as the dates in Alaska and North Dakota.”

Abdul added, “I want to extend my deepest apologies to all my amazing fans in Canada and the US, you mean the world to me and this truly breaks my heart. I’ve been looking forward to the energy, love, and connection we always share when we’re together. I promise I’ll be back, stronger and better, dancing my heart out and performing for all of you very soon, to give you the show you deserve. Refunds will be available at your point of purchase. Thank you for your love, your patience, and your understanding during this time. With all my love and gratitude, XoP ???????? ????.”

Fans flooded the comments with messages of support. “You just finished a 47 day tour, your body needs to rest. I hope you find time for yourself, take care of yourself, and rest up so you can heal. Health always comes first. Get well soon! ??????,” one person wrote.

Other comments included, “We love you so much! Take care of yourself” and “Sending healing prayers and strength! You are loved and will get through this and come out stronger than ever.”

In a 2023 interview with People, Abdul reflected on aging and said that entering her 60s “was such an incredible trajectory change for me, of really wanting to build and leave a legacy behind.”

While Abdul has enjoyed a long career that included eight seasons on American Idol, she shared that slowing down isn’t in her plans just yet. “I’ve only scratched the surface, and that’s how I feel,” she said. “People go, ‘She’s got more lives than a cat.’ For me, I’m a tenacious little attack hamster.
