Paulina Porizkova shares poem that 'perfectly describes' the end of her marriage to Ric Ocasek
Model Paulina Porizkova is spending some time reflecting upon the end of her marriage to late musician Ric Ocasek.
On Monday, she shared a poem, printed in the New Yorker, which asked, “How long have I been alone in this house but not alone?”
The 54-year-old wrote in the caption that the words of the poem made her cry because they perfectly described her own experience. Porizkova said she knew the woman, who’s growing older as she looks back at the mirror, “can do better.”
Porizkova made the comment the day after her interview with CBS Sunday Morning aired, which she talked about the end of her union with Ocasek.
“Suddenly in our marriage it seemed like only one of us wanted to be married, and that was me!” Porizkova said. “I just know that it’s really hard to be married to somebody if you’re the only one putting in all the work. And maybe it was age; maybe he just was tired. Maybe I was too — maybe I took too much energy to love. I don’t know. It’s possible.”
Porizkova and the Cars frontman married in 1989 and shared two adult sons. The couple separated in 2017, but they continued to live together. In fact, the model was the one who found Ocasek in their Manhattan home on Sept. 15, after he died in his sleep of heart disease. He was 75.
During that CBS Sunday Morning interview, Porizkova also revealed her reaction to being cut out of Ocasek’s will in the months before his sudden death. He wrote that she had “abandoned” him.
“It made the grieving process really, really tricky,” Porizkova said. “I would love to be able to be sad and miss him. And not also feel this incredible hurt and betrayal.”
Porizkova and Ocasek fell in love after she appeared in his band’s 1984 music video for “Drive.”
