Penélope Cruz's Moody 2024 Met Gala Gown Features Eight Types of Black Lace
The Oscar-winning actress, who served as a co-chair at last year’s Gala, stunned on the carpet in a Chanel Haute Couture gown that took 500 hours to create
Penélope Cruz is a vision in lace at the 2024 Met Gala.
The Oscar winner, 50, looks radiant in a chic floral-inspired ensemble honoring this year’s theme of “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.”
Cruz's Chanel Haute Couture bustier evening gown featured a train in silk tulle and silk taffetas embellished with eight different types of French floral laces in black and silver. The dress, which required 500 hours of work, is also embellished with flower-shaped jeweled buttons in the back.
The star told La La Anthony during Vogue's official red carpet live stream that the dress was an amalgamation of three different Chanel couture dresses from the 1940s, 1950s and from a more recent 2020 collection. “It’s a little combination of those three ideas and a few more," Cruz said. "It's like reawakening for us like Sleeping Beauty — the different versions of this dress.”
Cruz completed the look with a Chanel Tweed Pastel necklace and bracelet in 18K white gold, diamonds and cultured pearls, Tweed Mademoiselle ring in 18K white gold and diamonds and Bouton de Camélia earrings in 18K white gold and diamonds.
Cruz’s regal red carpet moment comes shortly after she celebrated her 50th birthday on April 28. The actress marked the milestone with a star-studded bash with guests like model Irina Shayk and, of course, Cruz’s husband, Javier Bardem.
The dress code for the 2024 Met Gala is “The Garden of Time,” inspired by J.G. Ballard story of the same name.

Cruz’s stunning ensemble is a worthy follow-up to her 2023 look — a pale blue Chanel ball gown adorned with gemstones and featuring a translucent organza hood.
The dress, which honored the theme of “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” was inspired by a design that debuted in Chanel’s Haute Couture Spring/Summer 1998 collection.
Cruz served as a co-chair at the 2023 Met Gala and joined Chanel as a brand ambassador in 2018.
