People Are Sharing "Bad" Movies They Think Aren't Nearly As Bad As People Say

BuzzFeed
7 min read

Look, not every movie ever made has to be an Oscar-winning masterpiece. In fact, I'd argue a lot of the greatest movies never received the accolades they so rightfully deserved (justice for The Big Lebowski!!).

And sometimes people come at certain movies with pitchforks and torches (especially critics) when the movies really don't deserve it! So, when Reddit user u/SirAren posed the question, "Which movies do you think aren't nearly as bad as people say?" to the r/movies community, I took note. Here are some of the top-voted responses that, I don't know, maybe you'll find controversial:

1.The Chronicles of Riddick (2004)

Vin Diesel as Riddick, wearing goggles on his head looking up

"I've met numerous people who think it's trash, but I think the Riddick series is one of the coolest new sci-fi franchises to come out over the last few decades. Never understood the hate toward it."

2.Van Helsing (2004)

David Wenham, Hugh Jackman, Kate Beckinsale

"I think it succeeds at doing exactly what it set out to do: be a fun adventure that's campy yet undeniably badass. It was like a spiritual successor to The Mummy, which I love. Same director, so not surprising.

The set designs, effects, outfits, and props were also awesome. Great score too. Film really nailed the ye' olde horror vibe.

Solid 7/10 for me. Wish we got more like it nowadays TBH."

3.Reign of Fire (2002)

Christian Bale, Matthew McConaughey in a post apocalyptic world talking

"No follow-up questions."

4.Jumper (2008)

Hayden Christensen, Jamie Bell running towards something in an old pyramid

"I always thought Jumper was a good movie."

"I wished it got a sequel. A sequel was promised at the end!"

5.Tron Legacy (2010)

Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund having a serious talk wearing futuristic suits with lights

"Most people agree the soundtrack is amazing, but I part ways with most of those same people when I say I thoroughly enjoyed the movie overall."

6.Last Action Hero (1993)

Austin O'Brien, Arnold Schwarzenegger looking at something on a notepad, covered in dirt after a fight

"Fun satire."

sadandshy

"Whenever I see Last Action Hero mentioned on Reddit, most people say they love it. It's one of those movies that bombed in theaters but received greater appreciation after it went to video.

Its theatrical release was also hurt by Jurassic Park. Jurassic Park was a massive event, and Last Action Hero released on JP's second weekend. It's no wonder why it got eclipsed at the box office."

7.Constantine (2005)

Keanu Reeves holding a cigarette, looking pensive sitting in a dump apartment

Damasticator

"I really didn't know anything about Constantine when I saw it in theaters and I really enjoyed it. Knowing more now, I see why fans didn't enjoy it. But I think it's a really fun supernatural detective film on its own. And one of the best depictions of Lucifer to date. But definitely not faithful. It's weird to think that the Lucifer in the Constantine film is based on the exact same character as the Lucifer in the TV series."

8.Oscar (1991)

Linda Gray, Sylvester Stallone, Ornella Muti dressed in fancy clothes for a party, smiling

"There's a John Landis comedy called Oscar starring Sylvester Stallone. It's pretty much universally accepted as being terrible, but me and my fiancée found it hilarious from beginning to end."

9.The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003)

10.The secret life of Walter Mitty (2013)

Ben Stiller riding a skateboard really fast down a quiet road in the countryside

"I think it's a superb and very positive movie and also helped me to stop daydreaming and start working towards my goals in life."

11.Solo (2018)

Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, Donald Glover as Lando inside the cockpit of the Millenium Falcon

"The Han Solo stand-alone movie was pretty good despite the hate it got (which seemed to be due to The Last Jedi being released a few months prior)."

12.Armageddon (1998)

Steve Buscemi, Will Patton, Bruce Willis, Michael Clarke Duncan, Ben Affleck, Owen Wilson wearing space suite walking out onto the tarmac

"Yeah it’s ridiculous, but what disaster film isn’t? Plus it has a great cast and the characters they play are all fun and enjoyable to watch on screen."—MCO87

13.Hook (1991)

Robin Williams as Peter Pan with a group of Lost Boys looking up to him

"So many critics hate it. It’s received wisdom these days that it’s one of Spielberg’s worst movies — but I think it’s super. Great performances in the middle from Williams and Hoffman. Fun premise. Some decent set pieces."

14.Ghostbusters II (1989)

Ernie Hudson, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis as the Ghostbusters, blasting with their proton packs

"Comedy sequels are hard. This one is still fun."

D4RTHV3DA

"It came out when I was 10, I was the intended audience, and it landed VERY well with me. So I've always liked it.

I feel like a lot of the hate were adults at the time who resented the fact that kids sort of co-opted the franchise and took it over."

15.The Day After Tomorrow (2004)

New York City frozen over so high that the statue of liberty is frozen up to its waist

"Fantastic disaster hyperbole."

Jccali1214

"I think Roland Emmerich films are 'bad' on purpose. He makes B-movies, but with blockbuster budgets. I’d argue The Day After Tomorrow and 2012 succeed at their goals, namely being visual spectacles."

16.The Grey (2011)

Liam Neeson looking beat up and intense, standing out in the snow

"It’s a story about a man who has given up on life but forces himself to fight for it in an unforeseen situation. I blame the marketing by making it look like 'Taken with wolves' when it’s much deeper than that, so the average action movie/Liam Neeson fan came out disappointed. One of my favorite films."

17.John Carter (2012)

Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins standing on a desert planet out in space, holding hands

JimmyJango00

"John Carter is an example of a good film that could have been a great film if it had decent marketing, mind reading martians, and everybody being naked."—JanusMesca

18.Warcraft (2016)

Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton in fantasy gear sitting on horses out in a field

"I liked Warcraft and wanted a sequel."

Likes_the_cold

"I still stand in awe at how amazingly faithful Duncan Jones was to the source material there. Definitely want to see a Warcraft 2."

20.Waterworld (1995)

Tina Majorino and Kevin Costner in a post apocalyptic world covered in water, sitting on the net of a ship

Gunmeta1

"I never understood the hate. It was so perfectly '90s. Grand scale practical effects. Kevin Costner was still A-list at the time. Sure, there's pedantic nit-picky 'LOL they look dirty, but covet dirt,' but who cares, it's a dress mistake not a world building mistake. I loved it."

21.The Incredible Hulk (2008)

Hulk ripping apart a vehicle

callmemacready

"I actually preferred it at the time to Iron Man. It was exactly what I wanted in a Hulk film: Hulk smashing and warring against his impulses to smash, and I really like the Abomination. I kind of wish we could have seen what Norton could have done with a follow up. Iron Man is a better movie, overall, of course. I just find The Incredible Hulk a little more entertaining."

23.Troy (2004)

Brad Pitt as Achilles, wielding a spear in battle

"Legit actors and a legit screenplay. Wolfgang Peterson did a fantastic job. So many good lines and the cinematography was excellent... people are just mad 'cause Brad Pitt was Achilles but, TBH, I thought he did a great job. Sean Bean as Odysseus, what’s not to like?"

27.And finally, The Punisher (2004)
