Save for the murder that propels the plot of The Perfect Couple—Netflix’s highly bingeable series based on the Elin Hilderbrand beach read of the same name—the show is every bit a visually sumptuous billboard for Nantucket. There is the palatial waterfront shingle style mansion that serves as the Winbury estate. And blue and white everything, from the wallpaper and Chinoiserie, to the legendary Nantucket hydrangeas, and even down to the Royal Copenhagen tea set and bottles of Saratoga sparkling on the kitchen counter.

“I was determined to get the wealth right,” showrunner Jenna Lamia tells T&C, “meaning people would be driving old Saabs with sand on the floor rather than brand new Mercedes, and they would be wearing shoes that they leave on the island and just wear every summer. I wanted to get that Nantucket wealth right, which is not showy.”

The clothes, naturally, had to reflect this very particular brand of Old Money by the Sea. As you may know, this is a place where a certain pair of $115 pants in a very specific faded red hue—also known as those famed Nantucket Reds—carries more social currency than a Patek. And, as Hilderbrand says, “the more beat up they are, the more authentic they are.”

The Winburys embody this aesthetic perfectly, whether it’s the way Nicole Kidman cocoons herself in light silks and cashmere as matriarch Greer, or the ease with which Liev Schreiber’s Tag hangs around his mansion in linens and robes. Just how rich are the Winburys? Greer’s wardrobe holds the answer. Her beige cashmere and pearly silk blouses and white satin pants signify a certain level of je ne sais quoi wealth. “The more cream colors she could wear, the more complicated it is to stay clean. And that’s a way to show how you don’t have to care about whether you get spots on your clothes or whatever,” costume designer Signe Sejlund, who also dressed Kidman for HBO’s The Undoing, told WWD.
