Generate Key Takeaways

Nicole Kidman may first and foremost be known as a movie star, but she also has an ever-growing television resume that includes “Hemingway & Gellhorn,” “The Undoing,” “Nine Perfect Strangers” and “Big Little Lies,” all of which received nominations at various awards shows. Her next TV project is the juicy Netflix hit “The Perfect Couple,” in which she plays romance author Greer Garrison Winbury, the mother of the groom during a wedding weekend that becomes ground zero for murder.

According to Gold Derby’s Golden Globe predictions, Kidman is in the Top 5 to receive a nomination for Best Limited/Movie Actress. That would be the Australian actress’ 16th career acting bid at the Globes (combining TV and film). And she could even earn nom #17 this year if she gets in for “Babygirl” on the movie side in the Best Drama Actress category.

Kidman’s five likely co-nominees in her Golden Globe TV category are reigning Emmy champion Jodie Foster (“True Detective: Night Country”), Cate Blanchett (“Disclaimer”), Naomi Watts (“Feud: Capote vs. The Swans”), Sofia Vergara (“Griselda”) and Kathryn Hahn (“Agatha All Along”).

Over at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, which combines television performances in lead and supporting, she’s down in eight place, with the Top 5 limited/movie actresses being Foster, Jessica Gunning (“Baby Reindeer”), Blanchett, Vergara and Watts; Gunning won the Emmy last month in the supporting race.

Not only does Kidman get to show off her acting chops in “The Perfect Couple,” which is chock-full of dramatic scenes and didn’t-see-that-coming twists (Greer’s revelation in the finale has already gone viral), but the entire cast flaunts their fun side, too, as they dance on the beach to Meghan Trainor‘s “Criminals.” Watch the fun main title sequence below.

“The Perfect Couple” also stars Liev Schreiber as Greer’s husband Tag Winbury, Eve Hewson as the bride Amelia Sacks, Billy Howle as the groom Benji Winbury, Meghann Fahy as the maid of honor Merritt Monaco, and Dakota Fanning as Greer’s daughter-in-law Abby Winbury. The project is developed and co-written by Jenna Lamia, based on the novel by Elin Hilderbrand, and all six episodes are directed by Susanne Bier.

While television critics give “The Perfect Couple” a “generally favorable” ranking at Metacritic, Kidman is almost universally praised. Richard Roeper (Chicago-Sun Times) writes that she “leads an outstanding cast in this six-parter that avoids all the usual pitfalls of a limited series.” Aramide Tinubu (Variety) notes, “Kidman, Schreiber and Fanning, in particular, effectively portray profoundly broken people.” And Tim Glanfield (The Times) raves, “[It’s] another masterclass from a fine actress.”

Kidman is a five-time Oscar nominee, winning once for “The Hours” (Best Actress, 2002). She also has been nominated for three Emmy Awards, winning twice for producing and starring in “Big Little Lies” (2017).
