There’s 104 more days of summer vacation on the docket, as the long-awaited return of “Phineas and Ferb” gets closer to reality. Co-creators and exec producers Dan Povenmire and Jeff “Swampy” Marsh were set to share more information about the upcoming revival during a Thursday panel at New York Comic-Con — including a reveal of who else is returning from the original animated series cast.

Scheduled to join Povenmire and Marsh on the Comic-Con stage were Vincent Martella (who plays Phineas Flynn) and David Errigo Jr. (who took over as Ferb Fletcher in 2020 from original star Thomas Brodie-Sangster), the two namesakes of the series. Also back are Ashley Tisdale as Candace Flynn, Caroline Rhea as Linda Flynn-Fletcher, Dee Bradley Baker as Perry the Platypus and Alyson Stoner as Isabella Garcia-Shapiro. Povenmire, of course, voices Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz and Marsh is Major Francis Monogram. Disney also promises a guest cast lineup of “notable actors, musicians, athletes and more.”

According to Disney, “the new season of ‘Phineas and Ferb’ will follow the inventive stepbrothers as they tackle another 104 days of summer. Candace is more determined than ever to finally bust her little brothers while their pet platypus, Perry, continues to lead a double life as the suave Agent P, whose sole mission is to thwart Dr. Doofenshmirtz from taking over the Tri-State area.” At the recent D23 convention, Povenmire and Marsh shared video of Season 5’s song “Summer Is Starting Right Now,” and revealed that the writing staff is made up of a mix of returning scribes and new writers who grew up with the show — including actress Olivia Olson, who is Vanessa Doofenshmirtz in the series.

It was first announced in January 2023 that the animated show was returning for 40 episodes. During its original run, “Phineas and Ferb” was produced from 2008 to 2015, for approximately 126 episodes on Disney Channel (and later, Disney XD), as well as specials and the movies “Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Across the 2nd Dimension” (2011) and “Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Candace Against the Universe” (2020). The show ended its original run with Candace essentially saving the day after a Dr. Doofenshmirtz invention threatened to repeat the day over and over in a loop, in an homage to “Groundhog Day.” The gang spent the original series (which took place over one summer) building a rollercoaster, traveling to outer space, playing with time travel, discovering the lost city of Atlantis, opening the hippest restaurant in the Tri-State area and saving the world with the help of Marvel superheroes.

“Phineas and Ferb” has won five Emmys, and Disney Television Animation said it was its most successful animated series ever in the kids 6-11 and tweens 9-14 demos. The show turned into a major global franchise for Disney, leading to a live touring show, junior novels, apparel, toys, video games, food, health and beauty. All four original seasons and the films are currently streaming on Disney+.
