Pizza cones anyone? Creative new ice cream shop opens in Daytona Beach

A brand-new ice cream shop recently opened its doors in Daytona Beach.

TenneSteve’s trash is bringing new sweet and savory snacks to Volusia County, serving a plethora of beachfront treats from freeze-dried-candy-infused rolled ice cream to pizza cones, shaved ice and more.

While the name may be inevitably confusing, don’t let it dissuade you from paying the new sweet stop a visit. The local eatery’s “trash” title is merely a “playful approach to reinventing traditional flavors and presenting them in a fresh, exciting way,” according to its website.

Owner Steve Hails, a Tennessee native, ice-cream lover and creative entrepreneur in the world of sweets, founded the ice cream shop earlier this year, intending to bring a unique spin on classic desserts here to Daytona Beach.

The eatery’s menu features a range of offerings that combine original flavors, textures and homemade treats, making for an ideal post-beach snack or Friday night dessert to satisfy that sweet tooth and enjoy with friends or family.

Following along with the step-by-step, do-it-yourself option, I customized and placed my order using the touchscreen to the right when I visited the quaint, oceanfront shop.

With root beer floats, shaved ice and a range of shakes staring me down, I felt myself pulled in several directions. Naturally, however, I had to try the rolled ice cream, opting for creamy chocolate when given the choice between that, dairy-free orange and vanilla.

Offered one mix-in, I landed on the TenneSteve Trash Cookie Dough, a mixture of cookie dough and M&M’s — although I would have liked to have added several others for a more decadent dessert of $10. Other mix-in options ranged from freeze-dried gummy bears, Oreo candy and pineapple to freeze-dried Jolly Ranchers, strawberries and vegan cake batter cookie dough.

The ice cream, poured, chopped and rolled in front of me, was in fact, a hit. Not too creamy or too tough, the rolled dessert was thick, rich and flavorful, making for a tasty, sweet afternoon treat.

Alongside the ice cream cup, I ordered one of the eatery’s tempting pizza cones, and, yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like — a fresh-made, cone-shaped pizza snack, customizable per your choice of sauce and toppings, with options ranging from pepperoni, chicken, onions and sausage to red sauce or Alfredo.

The made-to-order cone was a delicious, cheesy and savory lunch option for on the go. Although the pepperoni on my simple, red-sauce snack was a bit over-cooked, the $8 cone was a convenient lunch-break option — one I'm sure that frequent Daytona beachgoers will indulge in often.

The local shop also sells its freeze-dried candy in bags to go for $10, ranging in options like freeze-dried salt water taffy and gummy bears.
