This popular Phoenix fish market is opening a second location. Here's what we know

Nelson's Meat + Fish is opening a second location in north Phoenix at East Thunderbird Square North shopping center. According to owner Chris Nelson, the new 1100-square-foot location will be similar in size to the original location on Indian School Road and will have the same setup.

"At our core, we are a meat and fish shop. We procure some of the best proteins in town and there's a lot of work that goes into it," Nelson said. "I think we offer something unique. And there's a need for it in this market."

The new location, like the original, is all about premium seafood

Though Nelson's Meat + Fish offers ready-to-eat dishes, Nelson does not want to be defined as a restaurant. His focus remains steadfast on sourcing the best possible meats, and especially seafood, in the Valley.

"There's a reason why the quality of our seafood is what it is and our prices are what they are. We go to extreme lengths to source all over the globe and get options for our guests."

The markets don't have full kitchens, only inductive cooktops, hence the myriad cold preparations and raw crudo on the menu. This is also the reason they offer most menu items just once a week, like the ever-popular NMF proper lobstah roll, which has made Wednesday a day to look forward to for many.

"We are also really excited about the relationship with Dom and Holly," he said, referring to the new proximity to Dom Ruggiero's The Vanilla Gorilla bar.

The new shop is across the parking lot from The Vanilla Gorilla, so guests will be able to order lunch from the market to enjoy with their beverage at The Vanilla Gorilla, in an arrangement similar to the one the original shop has with The Wandering Tortoise.

What's on the menu at Nelson's Meat + Fish

According to Nelson, the weekly lunch menu at the new shop will pretty much mirror the Indian School location with offerings like fish taco kits on Tuesday, the proper lobstah roll on Wednesday, $2 oysters and Peekytoe crab salad on Thursday, chowdah and poke bowls on Friday and gravlax on Saturday. There will be a few menu items exclusive to each shop, which will be announced closer to their grand opening, which is expected to be sometime in May 2023.

"I want people to know how grateful we are to be able to do this," he said. "We don't take our success lightly. We work really hard and we do it because we love our guests."
