Possible ‘Goonies’ sequel? Report sparks rumors
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A sequel to the classic 1985 film “The Goonies” is allegedly in the works, according to a report by The U.S. Sun.
In the article, The Sun cites an anonymous source saying that the movie could debut in 2026 or 2027, and that it would likely feature a number of stars from the original movie. “The Goonies,” which debuted in 1985, was partially filmed in Astoria and along the Oregon Coast.
“The plan is to start developing the ideas for the follow up next summer, with a possible release date of 2026 or 2027,” the source is quoted as saying. “The original is so culturally significant, Warner Bros’ know they have to get it totally right. It’s likely major stars will come back but the possibilities of where to take the sequel are endless.”

But what does Oregon Film, the state’s film office, have to say about the report?
Oregon Film Executive Director Tim Williams told KOIN 6 News that people have gossiped about a possible “Goonies” sequel for years.
“Not a year goes by that we don’t hear about a possible ‘Goonies’ follow up,” Williams said. “We have not been contacted about a project like that in any manner. And, sadly, if we had, I couldn’t share any info about it unless and until the studio announced it because of confidentiality issues around inquiring and applying [for] projects.”

While there’s currently no evidence to suggest that the latest rumors are true, Williams said that Oregon Film would fully support a “Goonies” sequel that was filmed on the Oregon Coast.
“We are always excited about anything to do with [an] Oregon-made ‘Goonies’ and happy to support that in any way we can,” he said.
