Pregnant Princess Beatrice's Child Will Have a Royal Title — But Not from Buckingham Palace
When King Charles III’s granddaughter Princess Beatrice welcomes her second child with husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi “early in the new year,” that baby will indeed inherit a royal title. It just won’t be one from Buckingham Palace for the British Royal Family.
No, when Princess Beatrice married Mozzi in July 2020, she joined his family of Italian aristocracy and became an Italian “Contessa” and “Nobile Donna,” or noblewoman. Mozzi, as the eldest son of Count Alessandro Mapelli Mozzi, will inherit his family’s ancestral seat in northern Italy about an hour from Milan. According to Hello!, the 18th-century Villa Mapelli Mozzi palazzo has 13 bedrooms and a swimming pool. (It’s not Buckingham Palace, but it’s also not too shabby!)

So when the baby arrives, they will join their 3-year-old sister Sienna and 8-year-old half brother Christopher “Woolfie” Woolf in inheriting an Italian royal title. Sure, it’s likely that this child will join the line of succession to the British throne (Sienna is 10th in line!), but the royal family won’t be rushing to bestow a prince or princess title on a baby count or countessa.
Buckingham Palace was scrambling last week to correct an embarrassing error in Princess Beatrice’s pregnancy announcement. They originally called the eldest daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson “Her Royal Highess.” Highess. Not Highness. On the centuries-long list of mistakes the royal family has made, it’s at the very bottom, but it’s hard to believe they don’t have spell check.
The corrected announcement said, “Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice and Mr Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi are very pleased to announce that they are expecting their second child together early in the new year; a sibling for Wolfie and Sienna. His Majesty The King has been informed and both families are delighted with the news.”
Princess Beatrice’s sister Princess Eugenie and Ferguson certainly did seem “delighted” when they made posts of their own (sans typos).
“Congratulations Beabea,” Eugenie wrote on Instagram alongside throwback Christmas photos. “So looking forward to more on this journey of motherhood together. And adding another little one to the gang.”
Meanwhile, the Duchess of York posted a carousel that opened with a sweet picture of herself, Princess Beatrice, and Sienna. “A very proud GiGi/Mum today. Such an incredible blessing and an embrace to my heart. Wolfie, [Eugenie’s sons August and Ernie], and Sienna will be over the moon to have the fifth member of the five aside! ??”
