Prescott Park Arts Festival to present ‘Legally Blonde The Musical’ in 2024

PORTSMOUTH — "Legally Blonde The Musical" will be the Prescott Park Arts Festival's summer musical in its 50th anniversary season in 2024.

The nonprofit arts organization made the announcement during its annual Reveal Event held Wednesday night at The View at Pepperrell Cove in Kittery Point.

"Legally Blonde The Musical," which will be performed at Prescott Park for the first time, is scheduled to debut Friday, June 21. It will run most Thursdays through Sundays until Aug. 11. The 2007 musical is based on the 2001 movie starring Reese Witherspoon.

The story follows the transformation of Elle Woods as she tackles stereotypes and scandal in pursuit of her dreams.

“As we gear up to celebrate 50 years in 2024, we knew we wanted to bring another energetic musical to the Seacoast for the summer and one that would truly help us celebrate the past and look forward to our future," said Courtney Perkins, executive director of the festival. "Our production of 'Legally Blonde The Musical' will focus on transformation through self-empowerment, delivering catchy music and featuring large, energetic dance numbers.

"It’s a show with so many strong roles for women, elevating women’s voices and stories," Perkins said. "We are absolutely ecstatic to showcase the Seacoast’s incredible talent with this story. It’s going to be a real crowd-pleaser.”

The production will be directed by Tom Alsip, who is director of the University of New Hampshire musical theater program. This will be Alsip’s third summer in the park, and he will be joined by longtime festival choreographer Mary Beth Marino. The festival’s music director, Kathy Fink is retiring, and a new person will fill that role. Alsip directed "Footloose" and "Little Shop of Horrors" the past two summers.

“Legally Blonde is one of the most fun, exciting, high-energy musicals I have ever seen. I was lucky enough to be in the audience the night they filmed the show for MTV and the energy was contagious and electric,” Alsip said. “Legally Blonde is the kind of show that everyone will love that makes it clear that being true to yourself never goes out of style.”

Audition submissions will be accepted starting in December. More information on casting will be released soon. Updates will be posted at PrescottPark.org/about/auditions.

The Prescott Park Arts Festival, which will again offer its summer concert series and movie nights, offers free admission with donations suggested and reserved seating available for sale. Season passes for 2024 are available now at prescottpark.org/season-passes. Reservations for "Legally Blonde The Musical" will open in the spring.
