'The Price Is Right' host Drew Carey remembers one very expensive mistake
When we chatted with Drew Carey about his 10 years of hosting The Price Is Right, the conversation turned to some of the most famous bloopers and blunders that have aired during his tenure on the iconic CBS game show. Perhaps the most noticeable gaffe was one in 2015 when model Manuela Arbelaez accidentally gave away a car worth more than $21,000.
A contestant named Andrea was in the middle of a game in which she had to guess the correct price of a brand new Hyundia Sonata SE. Before Andrea could guess the price, though, Arbelaez revealed the correct number.
“Manuela felt so bad,” said Carey with a laugh. “I really felt bad for Manuela because you can see the look on her face and she looks like [she thinks] she’s going to lose her job. And she hid behind [the stand]. I think she was going to cry because she thought she messed up and that was going to be the end of her job and all I was thinking is, ‘This is going to be great. It’s going to be all over the internet, it’s going to be a viral video. We’re going to get so much publicity out of that.'”
And he’s right, The Price Is Right got a lot of attention for the moment. Carey said that Arbelaez was never in danger of losing her job. “We wanted to give the car away anyway,” Carey pointed out. “We’re in the giving-away-stuff business. We don’t care if we give away a car. We love it when people give away cars. [Manuela] was really beside herself that she made such a mistake. Nobody minded it at all. We had to talk her down.”
