Prince Harry Declares New Primary Residence After Years of Speculation About UK Return

Prince Harry is no longer recognizing the United Kingdom as his primary residence, according to new documents obtained this week by The Daily Mail.
The Duke of Sussex had until recently identified his home country as his main residence, despite moving to the U.S. in 2020 to establish a full-time home in California with his wife, Meghan Markle. The couple live in Southern California with their two young children, Prince Archie, 4, and Princess Lilibet, 2.
Harry, 39, now identifies the U.S. as his “New Country/State Usually Resident,” updated documents released by Companies House and shared by the British tabloid show.
Royal watchers have speculated about whether Harry and Meghan will return to the U.K. and establish a new home there ever since they stepped back as senior royals four years ago. Though the prince has expressed an interest in returning home, he said late last year that he would need to ensure that his family had police protection while on U.K. soil before doing so.
Since they are no longer working royals, the duke and duchess don’t have the personal security that other members of the royal family are granted. Though Harry has argued for the necessity of that protection in court, his appeals to reclaim those security measures for his family have so far been rejected.
“The U.K. is my home. The U.K. is central to the heritage of my children and a place I want them to feel at home as much as where they live at the moment in the United States,” Harry said in a December 2023 statement. "That cannot happen if there is no possibility to keep them safe when they are on U.K. soil.”
When asked earlier this year about the possibility of pursuing American citizenship, Harry told Good Morning America that he had “considered” the idea. Though he said becoming a U.S. citizen had “crossed my mind,” the prince said that doing so was not a “high priority” for him as of mid-February.
