Prince Harry Explains What Caused Some of the 'Rift' With Royal Family

As the alleged "rift" between Prince Harry and the rest of the British royal family continues, the 38-year-old royal revealed—in an enlightening new interview—one major factor in the family's split.

Sitting down with Rebecca Barry of ITV News for the special Tabloids on Trial, Harry was asked, "To what extent do you think your determination to fight the tabloids destroyed the relationship with your family?"

Noting that he was hesitant to say much for fear of "a torrent of abuse from the press," Harry said that it was a "central piece" of the situation, adding, "I've made it very clear that this is something that needs to be done. It would be nice if we did it as a family."

Barry spotlighted how little the royal family has publicly discussed the intense tabloids, leading Harry to say, "I think everything that played out has shown people what the truth of the matter is. For me, the mission continues. But it has caused part of a rift."

Around the time that Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, stepped back from their royal roles, they called out British publications for their actions, leading to two civil suits against The Daily Mail and The Sun that are ongoing, while the court ruled in Harry's favor in a phone hacking lawsuit against Mirror Group Newspapers in December, via People.

In Tabloids on Trial, Harry also touched on the negative effect the media had on his mother Princess Diana, as she was the subject of intense attention during her life.

Other people who claimed to be victims of hacking—including actor Hugh Grant, who settled a lawsuit against The Sun earlier this year for alleged unlawful information gathering, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter—are also in the special, which airs on July 25.
