Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have reportedly parted ways with the Duke of Sussex’s chief of staff Josh Kettler. While it’s common for companies to have employees come and go over time, critics are pointing out that the couple seems to go through staff members faster than other people. Is that a fair assessment?

The Daily Mail was the first to report that “Josh Kettler is no longer working for them,” but People offered a little more context about the position. The employee was “hired on a trial basis” and after three months, Kettler and the Duke of Sussex agreed that “it wasn’t the right fit.” He was a part of the Sussex team for two of Harry’s major events this summer, the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games in London and the couple’s visit to Nigeria in May.

The timing of the exit from the job comes as the dynamic duo head on another official tour to Colombia at the invitation of the country’s vice president, Francia Márquez. It’s not clear if they’ve hired anyone in Kettler’s place, but the Daily Mail is noting Harry and Meghan’s “revolving door” of employees since they landed in the U.S. in 2020 — they believe it’s nine people. A former employee for the couple claimed, “What may be most telling is that the entire time I worked there, I don’t think I heard a single current or former employee on their staff say they would take the job again if given the chance.”

While many of the people Harry and Meghan have hired are “high-performance” workers who have “excelled working for demanding bosses,” no one is really asking for the reasons why people have left. Sometimes working for A-listers quickly opens the door to other opportunities and people exit to leverage their careers. Of course, the Sussexes’ critics will likely point to the October 2018 bullying accusations made by their former communications secretary, Jason Knauf.

People seem to forget that Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand’s epilogue in their Finding Freedom book updated the status of those claims. “Sources confirmed that upon discovery of Jason [Knauf]’s email, two of the individuals mentioned in the email asked for any allegations made to HR about their experiences with Meghan to be rescinded,” the authors wrote.

It’s taken some time for Harry and Meghan to start their U.S. business plan and figure out a direction for their goals. This vision could result in a hit-or-miss approach when it comes to getting the right people onboard — it’s not an easy task even for royal family members.
