Prince Harry made a sobering appearance at an event supporting The HALO Trust. The international organization, committed to clearing landmines, was close to Princess Diana’s heart. The late royal famously walked through a minefield in Angola in 1997, less than a year before her tragic and untimely death. “The mine is a stealthy killer,” she had said. “Long after conflict is ended, its innocent victims die or are wounded singly, in countries of which we hear little. Their lonely fate is never reported.”

Prince Harry has continued to support The HALO Trust’s work in Angola, which he first visited in 2019. At the event on Monday, he admitted that “much has changed” in both his personal life and the world since that first visit. In that time, he became a father for the second time, welcoming Princess Lilibet, 3 with wife Meghan Markle with whom he also shares Prince Archie, 5.

“While you don’t need children to have a stake in the future of our planet, I do know that my mother would have been horrified that anyone’s children or grandchildren would live in a world still infested with mines,” Prince Harry said, per Us Weekly.

Because more than 27 years after Princess Diana’s famous walk through the field, kids worldwide — including all five of her grandkids — could still fall prey to the horrors of hidden explosives.

“As you know, The HALO Trust work in Angola meant a great deal to my mother carrying on her legacy is a responsibility that I take incredibly seriously and I think we all know how much she’d want us to finish this particular job,” he continued.

The Duke of Sussex has been especially sentimental about fatherhood in the weeks leading up to his 40th birthday on September 15. Earlier this month, he spoke to the BBC via a spokesperson about how Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet inspire him to continue his philanthropic endeavors — landmine-related and otherwise.

“Becoming a father of two incredibly kind and funny kids has given me a fresh perspective on life, as well as sharpening my focus in all my work,” he said. “Being a dad is one of life’s greatest joys and has only made me more driven and more committed to making this world a better place.”
