King Charles III doesn’t need another royal headache, but it looks like he’s getting one after Prince William went rogue and delivered some comments that don’t align with the palace’s message. It’s just the latest example of how the current king and the future king don’t see eye-to-eye when it comes to leadership — and it also resurrects the criticism about the Prince of Wales’ work ethic.

On Wednesday, while traveling with the British press during his Singapore tour, William boldly spoke about narrowing his focus to “social leadership” to “bring change” in a different way instead of taking on too many royal patronages. “You have to remain focused, if you spread yourself too thin you just can’t manage it and you won’t deliver the impact or the change that you really want to happen,” he told the print media, via Roya Nikkhah, Royal Editor of The Sunday Times on X.

Charles was probably slamming on the brakes when he heard what his oldest son said because it defies the current royal tradition of supporting as many patronages as possible. Here’s why it’s a problem, according to one philanthropist via The Daily Beast: “These comments will be very concerning to a lot of charities that have relied on their royal patrons for generations. It is almost impossible to raise any serious amount of money in Britain without a royal patron.”

Queen Elizabeth II had over 500 patronages during her reign and Prince Philip took on an astonishing 800 charities while in his senior royal role. The public’s perception that the late monarch worked hard for her country is quickly slipping away as William gets criticized for not doing enough for the current patronages he already has. He clearly wants to invest himself in two or three core causes, like the environment and the unhoused, but the current royal structure requires him to show up and support many charities — and William just doesn’t seem that interested.
