Program Revealed For Melbourne’s RISING 2024: Dirty Three, ONEFOUR, Yasiin Bey + More
RISING is set to return to Melbourne in June 2024, featuring several exclusive performances and festivals as well as some key debut Melbourne performances. Heading up this year’s music line-up are Dirty Three, who will play two nights at Melbourne’s Hamer Hall which will mark their first hometown shows in 14 years.
Sydney drill outfit ONEFOUR are also set to perform at historic Melbourne venue the Forum Theatre, marking their first time ever playing in the city after multiple attempts were shut down by police task forces. Other acts performing in Melbourne for the first time include Sky Ferreira, Fever Ray, Snoh Aalegra and Tirzah. The full music line-up for the RISING program can be found below.
Hannah Fox and Gideon Obarzanek, RISING’s artistic directors, have described RISING 2024 as “a festival that belongs to Naarm” in a press statement. “Some of the most exciting voices in art, music and performance offer moments of catharsis and reflection with mass music making in a church or summoning the cosmos in our town square,” they said.
“The most important part is coming together to be thrilled, bemused, shaken or delighted.”
ONEFOUR – ‘Spot the Difference’
RISING 2024 will also see the return of Hear My Eyes, an experimental film screening with a live score performed by a group of musicians. For this year’s instalment, Hieroglyphic Being will perform an original score for the 1987 horror classic Hellraiser. He will be accompanied by Robin Fox, who will also be providing lighting and lasers for a unique cinematic experience. British artist Jeremy Deller will also be providing a blend of music and cinema with his project 24-Hour Rock Show, in which music documentaries will be screened non-stop for an entire day at RMIT.
RISING debuted in 2022, following cancelled launches in 2020 and 2021 on account of the pandemic. The line-up included boygenius‘ Lucy Dacus, BORIS, Sampa The Great and Tkay Maidza. It returned in 2023 with performances from Thundercat, Cornelius, RVG, Birdz and Weyes Blood. In a review of Weyes Blood’s performance as part of RISING 2023, Music Feeds noted that she and her band “filled the venue with spiritual lightness” during their set.
“[The] performance [was] so perfectly contained, magnificently presented and emotionally rousing,” it read. “Everyone present would’ve gladly stayed for another encore or two.”
