These Providence and Newport restaurants made year-end best lists. How they got there.
Restaurants in Providence and Newport have been named to national lists placing them among the best in the country.
Just days after finding out his There, There modern diner was named one of Eater's 12 Best New Restaurants for 2023, owner/chef Brandon Teachout was announcing a second location. He's building momentum for his brand and preparing for the summer 2024 opening at Track 15, the new Providence food hall at the former Union Station.
Eater is the digital media brand devoted to food and dining. They honored There, There, which is at 471 West Fountain St. in Providence, on their annual best list, saying the "reimagined New England diner with a decidedly quirky sensibility reflects and refracts our current infatuation with nostalgia."
"It’s a carb-filled, comforting place to just chill out for a sec," wrote Eater writer Erika Adams. She cited "The Dream Burger" as having made regulars out of the neighborhood passersby. She liked that the two beef patties of the sandwich are "smushed just enough to get a good sear but not enough to call it a smash burger." She also liked The Kale Roll, calling it "a quirky sendup of a classic New England clam roll." She described it as a split-top bun filled with fried nuggets of cornmeal-battered crispy kale and a pickle relish, finished off with a dusting of a barbecue rub.
Teachout started out with his Dips, Dips food truck for French Dip beef sandwiches. You can still find the food truck cooking at Moniker Brewery, which is a block away from There, There.
Chanterelle among top restaurants
Newport's Chanterelle is on OpenTable's Top 100 Restaurants in America list for 2023.
The list was compiled featuring an updated methodology that uses reviews on the reservation site and other new metrics. It was culled from over 12 million verified diner reviews using diner ratings, percentage of reservations made in advance and five-star reviews.
Chanterelle Restaurant at Bouchard Inn was formerly Bouchard's which regularly made the Open Table list when it was owned by Albert and Sarah Bouchard.
It was early in 2023 when the Bouchards announced they were stepping back after more than 25 years from the Bouchard Restaurant & Inn. The renamed restaurant, a blend of French and American fare, is now under the direction of executive chef Jessica Odunwa, a Johnson & Wales University graduate.
In reviews on Open Table, diners say they love the ambiance, the exceptional service and dishes such as Salmon Carpaccio and Lobster Cardinale.
