'Punky Brewster' update: See a photo of the new cast and find out when the revival premieres
Punky has officially returned.
The revival of ‘80s TV series Punky Brewster, which was first reported in June 2019, will premiere Thursday, Feb. 25 on Peacock, the streaming service has announced. All 10 episodes will be released at the same time.
Peacock has also released a photo of the cast featuring the original Punky played by Soleil Moon Frye. In the new series, the character is all grown up, a single mom raising three kids. Freddie Prinze Jr. plays her ex-husband, Travis, while Cherie Johnson reprises her role as Punky’s bestie, Cherie.
Young actors Noah Cottrell (Skyscraper) and Lauren Lindsey Donzis (No Good Nick), plus newcomers Oliver De Los Santos and Quinn Copeland have joined too. Copeland plays Izzy, a girl in the foster care system who reminds Punky of herself at that age.
Prinze, a big fan of the first Punky Brewster, explained the tone of the new show in an interview with Yahoo Entertainment.
“I remember how much I loved the original show, and when I read the first script [for the revival], I totally got what they were trying to do,” he said in October 2019. “It’s not just a comedy; they put some real stuff in there and when they told me some of the topics they were going to be dealing with, I wanted to be part of the team.”
Frye shared her own photo of her “Punky babies” on Dec. 20, alongside a caption thanking everyone involved with filming during the pandemic.
“I feel so fortunate that we were able to shoot our season during these times and I hope in some way our Punky Power can help spread love,” she wrote.
The original four seasons of the show aired from 1984 to 1988. Punky Brewster was nominated for three Emmy awards and birthed a cartoon spinoff and a merchandise empire, from lunchboxes to dolls to coloring books.
Punky Brewster premieres Feb. 25 on Peacock.
