Rap icons coming to Delaware for exclusive dance party. Here's how to attend
There's nothing like attending a big house party with a couple hundred people in the Small Wonder.
But have you partied it up in a Delaware library with a pair of '90s rap legends?
If you haven’t yet, you might get the opportunity when hip-hop icons Kid 'N Play visit the Wilmington Public Library for a free 21-and-older event on Friday, Sept. 6.
This event is standing-room-only and is first come, first served. Wilmington Library promises this affair will be different from their typical sit-down events with high-profile guests like rapper Common, NBA legend Dennis Rodman or comedian Tiffany Haddish.
Kid 'N Play's event will have a party atmosphere with the icons on stage from 6 to 7:30 p.m. But the event won’t stop there.
There’s a DJ, who hasn’t been revealed yet, and they’ll keep the party jumping for the rest of the night as guests dance and mingle with one another. Finger food and a selection of alcoholic beverages will be served at this exclusive event.
Who is Kid 'N Play?
The duo Kid 'N Play comprises New York natives Kid (Christopher Reid) and Play (Christopher Martin).
Kid 'N Play made their name as upbeat rappers who made party tunes and steered clear of glorifying drugs and gang violence in their lyrics. The pair dropped three albums between 1988 and 1991: ''2 Hype'' (1988), ''Funhouse'' (1990) and ''Face the Nation" (1991).
The rappers took the momentum from their music success and turned it into a deal for films, a Marvel comic book, and a Saturday morning cartoon. Kid 'N Play's appearance in the movie franchise "House Party" catapulted them to another level of fame.
The rappers performed their signature kick step, or "Funky Charleston," dance in the first "House Party" in 1990. Over the years, Kid 'N Play would do their trademark dance on major platforms like Steve Harvey's talk show and on Nick Cannon's "Wild 'N Out." The dance is one of the most iconic in hip-hop history.
What is the rap film 'House Party'?
"House Party" is a cult-classic franchise that spans six comedic films from 1990 to 2023. Kid 'n Play co-starred in the first three films of the series. The latest film, simply titled "House Party," is a reboot with a new cast, and there's a cameo from LeBron James.
The story of the original "House Party" follows Kid sneaking out of his dad's home to attend an epic house party hosted by Play.
Rapper Ice Cube draws House Party actors to 'Friday'
One often overlooked aspect of "House Party" is that the series featured several rising actors at the time, many of whom starred in major films or their own TV sitcom. This includes Martin Lawrence and Tisha Campbell (who later starred as a married couple in the sitcom "Martin"), Clifton Powell, Chris Tucker and Bernie Mac.
Several actors from "House Party" would land in rapper Ice Cube's hit comedy franchise "Friday" like John Witherspoon, Chris Tucker, Kym Whitley (who was a guest at Wilmington Library in 2023), Clifton Powell and Anthony "AJ" Johnson.
