Razzie Awards: 'Holmes & Watson,' 'Happytime' lead worst of the worst; Trump gets a nod
On the Razzies’ hit list this year? Puppets, Sherlocks and the Mob.
The nominations are out for the 39th annual Golden Raspberry Awards, which fetes the very worst films Hollywood has to offer, and the love – or hate? – has been spread out among a number of films.
Leading the critically reviled charge this year, with six nominations each, are the John Travolta crime drama “Gotti,” Will Ferrell/John C. Reilly team-up “Holmes & Watson,” Dinesh D’Souza’s conservative-leaning “Death of a Nation” and the Melissa McCarthy comedy “The Happytime Murders.”
"Winners" will be announced Feb. 23, the day before the Academy Awards hands out its honors for cinema's finest.
“Gotti,” “Happytime” and “Holmes” are up for worst picture against “Winchester” (with four nominations, including one for Helen Mirren for worst actress) and “Robin Hood.”
Also of note: Melissa McCarthy, who’s in the running for a best actress Oscar nomination with “Can You Ever Forgive Me?,” was nominated for worst actress for “Happytime Murders” and "Life of the Party," and President Donald Trump (“Death of a Nation” and “Fahrenheit 11/9”) is in the worst actor category with Travolta, Ferrell, Johnny Depp (“Sherlock Gnomes”) and Bruce Willis (“Death Wish”).
Trump and “his self-perpetuating pettiness” are also up for the Razzies’ worst screen combo award.
