How did The Pioneer Woman meet her husband?

Ree Drummond was making a temporary pit stop in her hometown for a few months in between moving from Los Angeles to Chicago. A night at the bar with some girlfriends put her in the path of Ladd Drummond, who she has affectionately referred to as “Marlboro Man.”

Ladd was (and still is) pure cowboy: He grew up in a ranching family and now, he and his brother continue their family’s legacy on the ranch that’s been passed down to them, The Drummond Land & Cattle Co. While Ree was sure of the spark, he didn’t end up calling her until four months later.

A first date the following night was complete with a kiss on her porch, and Ree was certainly smitten! Only a short two weeks later, Ladd said those three little words — and the rest is history.

A mere nine-and-a-half months after tying the knot, the couple welcomed their first daughter, Alex. Since then, their family has expanded to include Paige, Todd, Bryce and Jamar and though her children have since fled the nest, the life she and Ladd have built together is one she’s proud of.

Loving Ladd

Ladd Drummond is known for his Wrangler jeans and affinity for Dr. Pepper, but aside from that,  he’s a skilled rancher and loving father and husband. He’s shown all of his children the ropes of ranching, and his daughter Paige has even returned home post-college to work on the ranch.

Ladd is a notoriously hard worker — and Ree even took to her blog to express her concern for his well being after a particularly rough summer. “A couple of weeks ago, after watching him limp inside, covered in dust and blood after a particularly long day, I actually said the words, ‘I don't think we can do this anymore.’ It was partly in jest, but also maybe a little bit not,” she wrote on her site. “‘How much harder can you work, how much longer can you do this, are you okay,’ is what I was really thinking.”

Despite her concerns, Ree took comfort in watching him enjoy himself and celebrate the engagement of their daughter, Paige, because at the end of the day, the cowboy life is the one he knows and loves.

The Pioneer Woman and her husband keep the magic alive

With such busy lives, it can be hard to find the time to prioritize romance, but Ree is sure that they get their quality time with one another.

"Ladd and I always wind up together on the couch in the evenings, no matter how busy we've been throughout the day. We both have a soft spot for old Westerns, any of The Godfather movies and '80s flicks," she told The Pioneer Woman. "We're on the same page with snacks, too. Queso for us and popcorn for the kids!"

Another thing they do to connect? “We always touch feet at night,” Ree told PEOPLE in 2017. “Even if one of us a little bit miffed, or if someone’s not feeling it…if our feet touch, I always know, ‘Okay, it’s all good.'”
