Readers crown Pennywise 2017's Best Villain, and more Yahooies winners
Last week, Yahoo Entertainment readers voted in our third annual Yahooies, which honor the best — and sometimes worst — of the year. Today, we reveal the winners.
The nominees for Best Comeback were, from left to right: Twin Peaks: The Return, Star Trek: Discovery, Gendry on Game of Thrones, Blade Runner 2049, and Dave Chappelle.
The Best Comeback of 2017 with 33 percent of the vote: Dave Chappelle. As our Kevin Polowy wrote:
“After turning down millions from Comedy Central and disappearing into obscurity (aka South Africa and Ohio) in 2006, the popular comic had been inching his way back into the limelight in recent years, with some surprise appearances at New York comedy clubs here, a gig hosting SNL there. Call it a Half Baked comeback, if you will. But the comeback came full-on in 2017, with the suddenly ubiquitous Chappelle inking a $60 million deal with Netflix that’s so far yielded two predictably hilarious standup specials, The Age of Spin and Deep in the Heart of Texas, already the two most-viewed comedy specials in the streaming service’s history. He’ll debut a third, Equanimity, on New Year’s Eve, perfectly capping off a spectacular ’17.”
Blade Runner 2049 (24 percent) was the runner-up, followed closely by Gendry on Game of Thrones (23 percent), Star Trek: Discovery (12 percent), and Twin Peaks: The Return (7 percent).
The nominees for Biggest Disappointment were, from left to right: Mother!, The Mummy, Iron Fist, Baywatch, and The Dark Tower.
The Biggest Disappointment of 2017 with 28 percent of the vote: The Mummy. As our Marcus Errico wrote:
Here’s a sentence we never expected to type: Tom Cruise is no Brendan Fraser. Cruise’s messy mash-up of monstrous horror, Indiana Jones-aspiring action, and Mission: Impossible-style stuntwork deservedly failed to click at the megaplex. Worse yet, the misfire not only tainted Cruise’s box-office rep but also effectively sunk Universal’s attempt to bring together its classic catalog of creatures in a shared universe. The Mummy’s curse lives!
Baywatch (20 percent) was the runner-up, followed by Iron Fist (19 percent), The Dark Tower (17 percent), and Mother! (15 percent).
The nominees for Best Villain were, from left to right: Rose (Get Out), Pennywise (It), Aunt Lydia (The Handmaid’s Tale), Demo-dogs (Stranger Things), and Perry (Big Little Lies).
The Best Villain of 2017 with a massive 53 percent of the vote: Pennywise from It. As Errico wrote:
“Stephen King said it best to us earlier this year: “Clowns are scary. There’s just no way around that.” And, apologies to Tim Curry, Bill Skarsg?rd’s take on It‘s demon clown takes the scary to a whole new level with his twitchy-dancing, kid-killing, nightmare-inducing Pennywise. This horrific harlequin is easily the villain of the year — just ask poor Georgie.“
Get Out‘s Rose (24 percent) was runner-up, followed by Stranger Things‘ Demo-dogs (9 percent), Big Little Lies‘ Perry (8 percent), and The Handmaid’s Tale‘s Aunt Lydia (6 percent).
The nominees for Best Death Scene were, from left to right: Perry (Big Little Lies), Bob (Stranger Things), Yondu (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2), Littlefinger (Game of Thrones), and Rose (Get Out).
The Best Death Scene of 2017 with 38 percent of the vote: Yondu from GOTG2. As Polowy wrote:
“Only the good die Yondu. Rooker’s mohawked, blue-hued Ravager is the Severus Snape of Marvel’s space odyssey: We never really get a handle on whether he’s good or bad until he transitions to the great hereafter. In Yondu’s case, he proved the ultimate protector — and true daddy — to Chris Pratt’s cocky Star-Lord, and paid the ultimate price (we’re talking Bruce Willis, Armageddon style) to save his adopted heir’s life. Just don’t tell Rooker he’s dead.”
Game of Thrones‘ Littlefinger (35 percent) was the close runner-up, followed by Stranger Things‘ Bob (17 percent), Big Little Lies‘ Perry (6 percent), and Get Out‘s Rose (4 percent).
The nominees for Saddest Breakup were, from left to right: Chris Pratt and Anna Faris, David Otunga and Jennifer Hudson, Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor, Black Sabbath, and Josh Duhamel and Fergie.
The Saddest Breakup of 2017 with a commanding 55 percent of the vote: Chris Pratt and Anna Faris. As our Taryn Ryder wrote:
“This one was both surprising and gutting. In August, Pratt and Faris announced they were separating after eight years of marriage. In a joint statement, the couple said they were “disappointed” because they “tried hard for a long time” to save their relationship. Although Faris has already moved on romantically, they have vowed to remain friends because they have one (insanely adorable) child together, their 5-year-old son, Jack.“
Stiller and Taylor (26 percent) were the runners-up, followed by a tie between Black Sabbath and Duhamel and Fergie (both with 9 percent), and Otunga and Hudson (2 percent).
