Ready for a Lainey Wilson summer? How to craft that 'bell bottom' look
On one level, Lainey WIlson's "Bell Bottom Country" summer kicks off on North American stages when her "Country's Cool Again" tour stops in Music City on May 31 and extends through the first week of June 2024.
However, that date's concert event at downtown Nashville's Ascend Amphitheater, plus time spent onstage at Nissan Stadium during CMA Fest — or at her forthcoming Bell Bottoms Up bar — isn't exactly where it all began for the reigning Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year in 2024.
Note that alongside having a trio of solo singles ("Heart Like A Truck," "Things A Man Oughta Know," and "Watermelon Moonshine") and collaborations ("Never Say Never" with Cole Swindell, "Save Me" with Jelly Roll, and "wait in the truck" with HARDY) as worldwide radio and sales hits, her timeless, throwback late 1960s-early 1970s fashion sense has keyed her massive popularity.
2024 has seen Wilson double down on her fashion sense alongside her burgeoning fame, co-signing and/or co-developing a series of cost-efficient to more expensive choices for her fans wanting to mirror her looks.
These are fashions that, from the glass cases of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum to stages now worldwide, are growing in iconic appeal.
What kind of hat does Lainey Wilson wear?
Mid-April 2024 finally saw social media reap the benefits (check the Instagram feeds of favorites like Luke Combs' wife, Nicole, Brittney Spencer and Hailey Whitters, among many) of the online and limited retail rollout of Wilson's collaboration with the five-decade-old Charlie 1 Horse Hat Company.
"Watching y’all come out to the shows in your bells and hats only cemented my decision that we needed a special line just for all the cowgirls and cowboys out there lookin’ to make a statement with their look," stated Wilson on the brand's Instagram feed.
Charlie 1 Horse is not a limited edition indie retailer, though. Batavia, Illinois-based The HatCo brand (also the owner of other brands familiar to cowboy hat lovers, including Stetson, Resistol, and Dobbs) owns Charlie 1 Horse. Unlike the other brands, Charlie 1 Horse is renowned for manufacturing a variety of hats, including crushable hats, fedoras, felt hats, straw hats and front-decorated western hats, all bearing the brand's hand-branded, firebrand signature horseshoe.
Kid Rock, Richard Petty, Montgomery Gentry's Eddie Montgomery, Gretchen Wilson, Tracy Lawrence and Hank Williams, Jr. have all worn the brand in the past. However, Wilson's signature line of hats, ranging in price from $130-$240 reflect a deep level of integration with the award-winner's musical catalog.
Will it appear that 25 percent of the line may be sold out at any given time? Sure. Wilson's a commercial pitchwoman and touring the globe with acts including the Rolling Stones, plus, as of May 16 the Academy of Country Music's Entertainer of the Year. However, with a brand like HatCo in support, those pieces will likely be back in stock at key festival moments throughout the country music calendar and in Wilson's own 2024 and beyond.
Where to find Lainey Wilson's famous bell-bottom pants?
Since 2022, Wilson has, in conjunction with the release of her "Bell Bottom Country" album, mirrored her "country with a flare" branding and sold a line of 98% cotton and 2% spandex "Country With A Flare" bell bottoms via her website.
Available in three different designs, they're likely similar but different from the style of pants Wilson wanted to wear when she began wearing bell-bottom pants in Baskin, Louisiana, at age 6.
Those pants cost $40 plus shipping and are available in green tie dye, maroon "Country With a Flare" and paisley-inspired "Heart Like A Truck" variations.
Are you looking to spend perhaps a bit more and literally wear the same designs Wilson has worn in magazine shoots, onstage and on red carpets? Los Angeles-based custom maker Julie McKinney's CatONineClothing has made custom and ready-to-ship variations on her spandex and velvet high-waisted or low-rise flared pants for the past three years.
Expect to spend between $150 and $700 on those designs. However, if your Wilson fandom demands this level of engagement, the value is priceless.
How to get the 'Hang Tight, Honey' singer's red carpet look?
Yes, it's possible to put together an entire Lainey Wilson-inspired look for a formal dress event.
At the recent 2024 Academy of Country Music Awards, the "Hang Tight Honey" singer wore a red, crystal-embellished blazer and matching pants from New York City's Area, rings from celebrity-beloved Kendra Scott and a custom Charlie 1 Horse hat.
At the recent 2024 CMT Music Awards, Wilson mixed limited-run retail pieces with affordable indie jewelry brands and some big-budget couture and vintage pieces, too.
Pants for the 2024 CMT Music Awards were again sourced from New York City-based Area (also known for outfitting Kendall Jenner and Taylor Swift). Retail brand superdown provided Wilson's top. Minnie Lane Jewelry provided Wilson's jewelry. Stylist and art director Minnie Lane Phillips' seven-year-old jewelry line offers "statement and minimal" pieces that blend "vintage and new" inspirations.
If you are looking for a pop of vintage leather, sterling silver, or turquoise to accompany your Wilson-inspired fit, her 2024 CMT Music Awards look was accompanied by a piece from Yoakum, Texas' 35-year-old Double D Ranch's vintage collection.
Known as "the premier lifestyle brand of the West," they offer hand-crafted, "bohemian, cowboy and Native American" design collections, including embellished biker jackets and hand-embroidered tees. They have also dressed artists, including Aerosmith's Steven Tyler, in all manner of vintage luxury pieces.
