“After trying to heal from her wounds from [Season 1’s] arduous trial and deadly affair, Jax Stewart (played by Emayatzy Corinealdi) is attempting to get her life back on track,” reads the official Season 2 description. “That is until one of her closest friends, [Shanelle], reveals that she has killed her husband. Her friend is claiming self-defense, but an uncompromising prosecutor thinks otherwise. Needing all the help she can get, Jax brings in an ambitious defense attorney to lead the case, but things get tense very quickly. Can Jax defend her friend, save her marriage and protect her energy while being catapulted into the biggest case of her career? Or will she lose it all?”
The series also stars McKinley Freeman (Queen Sugar), Tim Jo (This Is Us), Angela Grovey (Joyful Noise), Thaddeus J. Mixson (Candy Cane Lane) and newcomer Aderinsola Olabode. Morris Chestnut (The Resident) joined the cast in Season 2 as defense lawyer Corey Cash, but his character moved on from Jax’s law firm after Shanelle’s case was closed in the finale.
The Season 2 ender revealed that Shanelle was protecting her daughter, who was the one who killed her abusive father to save Shanelle. Despite being found guilty, Shanelle received a lesser sentencing and was released from prison. Meanwhile, Jax and her husband Lewis learned that they were being sued by his baby mama for their premature son’s death.
Created by Raamla Mohamed (Little Fires Everywhere, Scandal), Reasonable Doubt hails from Onyx Collective (which “curates globally entertaining stories by creators of color and underrepresented voices”) and counts Kerry Washington and Larry Wilmore among its executive producers.
