Reddit gives nod to users who wreaked havoc on Wall Street in shortest Super Bowl ad ever
Just moments before the second half kickoff of the Super Bowl on Sunday, Reddit surprised viewers, those who caught it anyway, with the shortest ad in Super Bowl history at only five seconds long. The ad was simple, with little sound and no actors, just text on screen. In the text, Reddit admitted that they could only buy a short spot, as airtime cost roughly $5.5 million for 30 seconds, but they wanted to acknowledge the havoc Redditers wreaked on Wall Street recently, saying “One thing we learned from our communities last week is that underdogs can accomplish just about anything when they come together around a common idea.” The ad also acknowledged that to be able to read it, one would have to pause the TV.

Meanwhile, another high-profile polarized viewers: Bruce Springsteen’s Jeep commercial in which he calls for national unity. The commercial was shot, at least in part, in Lebanon, Kan., a tiny town that prides itself in being the geological center of the continental United States. In it, Springsteen says, “It’s no secret. The middle has been a hard place to get to lately. Between red and blue, between servant and citizen, between our freedom and our fear.” While some fans cheered the message of finding common ground, others found its message off-putting.
@springsteen @Jeep commercial to air tonight during the #SuperBowl . What a great message. This is a huge reason why I love this man. “We Will Get Through This Great Divide. Our Light Has Always Found It’s Way Out Of The Darkness. And There Is Hope. On The Road Up Ahead”. ???? pic.twitter.com/uYIluJaYWR

I’m sure Bruce Springsteen had reasons for doing that Jeep ad, but meeting white supremacy and fascism in the middle is just not what we should be doing ever.
Also, the Christian nationalism was super gross and they should do better.— Eric (he/his) (@eric_clapp) February 8, 2021
One of the more popular commercials featured Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher, with Kunis repurposing Shaggy’s famous denial: “It wasn’t me.” In the ad for Cheetos Crunch Pop Mix, Kunis repeatedly denied stealing Kutcher’s bag despite traces of orange powder. After Kunis’s last denial, Shaggy says, “Well that’s the first time that’s ever worked.”
Perhaps the funniest commercial of the day came in a General Motors ad in which Will Ferrell raged at Norway for beating the U.S. in electric vehicle usage. Ferrell puts his hand through a globe before stating that he won’t stand for it, going on to say, “With GM’s new Ultium battery, we’re gonna crush those lugers. Crush them!”
