Refugee family breaks down in tears after 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition' reveal
Sunday evening's episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition was a real tearjerker. The revamped show, hosted by Jesse Tyler Ferguson, featured a refugee family from the Congo.
Ashraf, Azida and Habiba Barobi fled the Congo after their parents and youngest sister were killed in a fight between rebels and the government. They spent three years in a refugee camp in Uganda, where they were reunited with an aunt and one of their cousins. The five family members were granted asylum in the U.S. and settled in Ogden, Utah.
The town of Ogden gifted the family a parcel of land and the television series built a six-bedroom, 2,900-square-foot home on the property. The home is "net-zero" and fitted with solar panels to keep operating costs down. A representative from Weber State University also gifted the refugees full scholarships to the school.
It was an emotional episode with the family, contractors, and volunteers all shedding tears. It was also very emotional for viewers, who took to Twitter to share in the tears of joy.
