Release of Mueller report is comedy gold for late night hosts
The wait is finally over! The Mueller report was released on Thursday, and it gave all the late night talk show hosts plenty of material for their monologue jokes. On The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, Stephen Colbert lead the charge, doing two full monologue sets.
Colbert had a lot to say, as he held the full 448-page report in his hands to start the show. “Until this morning, no one knew what was in it. We hadn’t read it, Congress hadn’t read it, and evidently Bill Barr hadn’t read it either. Because there is some insane s*** in here!” Colbert joked, referring to U.S. Attorney General William Barr, who held a press conference Thursday morning before the release of the report, and who released his own summary of the report back in March.
Although, Barr wasn’t the only one who had his eyes on the report before it was released. In his press conference, Barr told reporters, “Earlier this week the president’s personal counsel requested and was given the opportunity to read a final version of the redacted report before it was publicly released.” On Late Night, Seth Meyers had a hard time ignoring that fact. “That means Rudy Giuliani got to read the report before the rest of us,” Meyers pointed out. “And from the looks of it, he was trying to open his eyes wide enough to read all 400 pages at once.”
If you’re thinking, 400 pages seems like a lot to read, don’t worry, much of it was redacted. And if you’re wondering why it was so redacted, Jimmy Kimmel put together a School House Rock-style cartoon to explain it.
It wasn’t just the late night hosts who were having fun with the report. President Donald Trump celebrated the release with a Game of Thrones-inspired tweet.

And Colbert gave an interesting explanation for all that smoke in the photo. He said, “That picture, by the way, is Trump posing next to all the smoke that William Barr just blew up his ass.”
