VERO BEACH — In the midst of this hectic holiday season, my friend and I sought out a comfortable spot to meet for a mid-morning cup of coffee. With the plethora of great coffee shops in Indian River County, we had options galore but there was one place I had been dying to try. Coffee House 1420, aptly named for its location at the corner of 14th Avenue and 20th Street in Vero Beach, was where I was headed.

Upon learning this was my first visit, my friend chastised me for not having tried Coffee House 1420 earlier, proclaiming it to be her favorite morning destination. She gave me the lay of the land, grabbed her favorite table alongside a sunny window and told me what was good — everything!

Her summary proved correct.

If I thought I was going to linger over a cup of holiday gingerbread cappuccino ($3.50), I was wrong. After the first lady-like sip, I found myself slurping down the restorative elixir. My friend, much more in control, slowly enjoyed a cup of peppermint mocha ($4.75).

Much of what is displayed in the bakeshop is house-baked each morning. We shared an irresistible almond croissant ($4.95), so delicate with a light almond filling; and a pear walnut kuchen ($3.95), a moist, dense melt-in-your-mouth cake with a crispy baked top. Both were excellent.

My friend had a slice of asparagus quiche ($7.95) that shared the plate with a pretty sprinkling of fresh veggies. The crust was tender and flaky and the filling was savory.

While I was impressed by everything we sampled, my absolute “must try” is the granola bowl ($5.95). If you are a granola lover like I am, this house-made almond pecan granola is unlike any other with its satisfyingly nutty, chewy texture and not-too-sweet taste. And to know this stuff is actually healthy makes my heart sing! The granola takes up a third of the bowl with tangy Greek yogurt and fresh berries rounding it out. All is drizzled with honey.

There is plenty of seating inside this appealingly light and bright coffee house with additional sidewalk tables outside. Service is friendly and fast. Mid-morning, they were doing a nice, even business, but my friend tells me early morning is quite the rush.

But if waiting on line at the counter for a couple of minutes to place your order is something you must do, I would say it’s well worth it!
