New restaurant: Sub, sandwich shop with signature Dagwood reopens in new Vero location

A longtime popular sub and sandwich shop in Indian River County has reopened at a new location just a half-mile away — after five months of delays.

Dagwood’s Deli & Sub Shop opened Sept. 5 on the northeast corner of 16th Street and 14th Court in Vero Beach, just east of Vero Beach High School’s Citrus Bowl football field.

The location previously was Wes’ Backyard BBQ & Grill, which closed last year. Before that, it was home to Heavenly Wings, which moved across the street.

All things food: New restaurants, reviews, inspections & best bets for all occasions

Josh and Marie Jenkins originally opened Dagwood’s in 2012 in a strip plaza on 17th Street, but they closed in April to move to a larger, standalone building with ample parking and an expanded menu.

“We had such horrible parking,” Josh Jenkins said, “and we were never allowed to do fried goods there.”

Now that their new kitchen is built for frying food, they've added pizza, burgers and fried items to the menu, including Buffalo chicken tenders and fries instead of just chips.

Their sandwiches stayed the same, including their popular specials:

The signature Dagwood sandwich consists of ham, turkey, roast beef, pepperoni, bacon, cheddar, provolone, mayonnaise, mustard, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles, banana peppers, black olives, jalapenos and the restaurant’s own blend of spices, served with oil and vinegar on the side.

All subs are served cold, toasted or pressed on a choice of bread: white sub roll; or sliced white, wheat or rye bread; or flour tortilla wrap.

Toppings include mayonnaise, mustard, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles, banana peppers, black olives, jalapenos, spicy mustard, honey mustard, boom boom sauce, avocado, green peppers, horseradish mayonnaise, cucumbers, carrots, sprouts and red pepper relish.

The new restaurant and seating is double the previous location, and it has indoor and outdoor dining options.

Jenkins said he’s dreamed of owning his own restaurant since one of his first jobs in a small pizza and sub shop. The couple saved for years before they left their day jobs and opened Dagwood's.

They had planned to spend just a weekend moving into the new location, but they were delayed by more bureaucratic red tape than expected.

“It’s just a process,” Jenkins said. “There’s just so many steps.”
