Rian Johnson open to bringing back old characters — including Jar Jar — in his upcoming 'Star Wars' trilogy
Although Star Wars: The Last Jedi is still days away from release, writer-director Rian Johnson is already preparing an entirely original Star Wars trilogy that will focus on a set of new principal characters. That much we know — and that much he knows.
But will his future films return established characters from the Star Wars canon?
“I’m just starting to think about it, and get into, so who knows?” Johnson told Yahoo Entertainment (watch above). “I want to keep it just totally wide open in terms of possibilities. That’s what’s so exciting about it right now, just the notion of one story, three movies, the sky’s the limit. We can really do anything. The possibilities are thrilling.”
While Last Jedi hero and rabid Star Wars fanboy John Boyega (Finn) suggested focusing the story on Galen Marek, aka Starkiller from The Forced Unleashed video games, Johnson entertained our notion of bringing back a certain much-maligned Gungan for a shot at redemption.
“I would be down with bringing old Jar Jar back — we’ll see,” Johnson said with a laugh.
Could Mr. Binks made a comeback à la Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler?
“What if it was just in the style of The Wrestler except it was Jar Jar?” Johnson countered. “We’d shoot it in black and white.”
We smell a blockbuster.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens Dec. 15.
