Ripley may have had a short run, but its legacy will live on thanks to the 76th annual Emmy Awards.

The series took home the coveted prize for best directing for a limited or anthology series or movie at the Emmys 2024 on Sunday, Sept. 15.

Director Steven Zaillian said while accepting the award that “Making Ripley in Italy was its own reward, it was like a dream. I didn’t need anything after that. And I know the other directors know what I’m talking about, the work was its own reward. I still really appreciate this honor, though."

"I share it with literally hundreds of people who worked on Ripley. The actor, Andrew, Dakota, Elliot, Johnny Mauritzio and all of the other wonderful Italian actors, the producers, the incredible department heads and crew. All of them artists in their own right," he continued. "I thank them, the academy, Netflix, and my family. Thank you."

Netflix’s Ripley, based on Patricia Highsmith's 1955 novel The Talented Mr. Ripley, stars Andrew Scott as con-man Tom Ripley. The story had previously been told in the 1999 movie The Talented Mr. Ripley starring Matt Damon and Jude Law, so Scott, 47, wanted to put a new twist on the tale.

“People have a lot of preconceptions about Tom Ripley,” Scott told Netflix's Tudum. “So it’s my job, I suppose in some ways, to ignore all that and try to create our own particular version of it.”

Scott did exactly that: the Irish actor’s portrayal earned him an Emmy nomination in the outstanding actor in a limited series or a movie category.

Though only one show could win for best director, the four other nominees were equally worthy of the category, including the directors for Netflix’s Baby Reindeer, which tells Richard Gadd’s semi-autobiographical story of an aspiring comedian and his stalker, sparked debate among viewers following its April debut and picked up 11 total Emmy nominations.

Fargo, Lessons in Chemistry, Ripley, Feud: Capote vs. The Swans and True Detective: Night Country round out the best directing for a limited or anthology series or movie and each brought viewers to a different point in time.
