River Phoenix's Sister Rain Marks His 54th Birthday, More Than 30 Years After “Stand by Me” Actor's Death
River Phoenix died of a drug overdose at age 23 on Oct. 31, 1993 in Los Angeles
Rain Phoenix is keeping her brother River Phoenix's memory alive on what would have been his 54th birthday.
Rain, 51, shared a number of photos of River, who died in 1993 of a drug overdose at age 23, to her Instagram on Friday, Aug. 23 to mark the late actor's birthday. The photo carousel also contained a number of quotes attributed to the Stand by Me actor, who was an up-and-coming star in the years before his death.
"Happy Birthday River ??," she simply wrote in a caption to her post.
Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, who was friends with River and present when the actor collapsed outside the Los Angeles nightclub The Viper Room — he accompanied River to the hospital — wrote in a comment on Rain's post, "Happy birthday most beautiful one."

River was the eldest of the five Phoenix siblings — including Rain, 51, Joaquin, 49, Liberty, 48 and Summer, 45 — who grew up traveling internationally with their parents as missionaries for the Children of God. After parting ways with the religious movement, the family settled in California in the late 1970s, where River eventually embarked on an acting career. He made his feature-film debut in 1985’s Explorers and broke out in the following year's Stand by Me, the Rob Reiner-directed film adapted from Stephen King's 1982 novella The Body.

River received an Academy Award nomination in 1988 for his role in Running on Empty and appeared as a young Indiana Jones in 1989’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. He also befriended many Los Angeles-based musicians and actors like Keanu Reeves and Johnny Depp — who co-owned the Viper Room at the time of Phoenix's death — in the years before he died.
Rain and Joaquin were present at the time of River's death on Oct. 31, 1993. Joaquin called 911 to the scene, while Rain attempted mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, as Entertainment Weekly reported at the time.
Rain, her sibling and their mother Heart Phoenix typically share tributes to River on the anniversaries of his birthday and death. Last year, Heart, 79, shared a photo of River playing the guitar to Instagram as she wrote that his birth was "one of the most amazing days of my life."
"Just as he tried to do with most people, River Jude embraced each of his siblings (who entered through the same portal after him) with his humor, wisdom, authenticity, talent, compassion, vulnerability and undying Love," she wrote in part in a caption at the time. "I would say he was and still is our greatest teacher."
