Rob Lowe Says “Tommy Boy” Costars David Spade and Chris Farley Fought Over a Turkey Sandwich... and Him

"None of us realized the impact that 'Tommy Boy' would have," Lowe said of the hit 1995 comedy

Rob Lowe is sharing some of his Tommy Boy costars David Spade and Chris Farley's antics from making the beloved '90s comedy.

During Lowe's Monday, July 15 appearance on The Rich Eisen Show to promote his Netflix series Unstable, host Rich Eisen asked the actor whether it was true that Spade, 59, and the late Farley got into a physical fight over him while filming Tommy Boy.

"Oh yeah. I just saw Spade this weekend, we were at a party and we were talking about how much they would fight over me," Lowe, 60, said. "The big fight was because I came into the hotel after shooting. Spade was not shooting that day but Farley was, and Farley and I hit the jacuzzi, did a sauna and a jacuzzi."

"And the next day, apparently, Farley was like, 'Guess who I was in the jacuzzi with?' And Spade was like, 'Who?' 'Me and Rob.' He was like 'You didn't call me!' " Lowe recalled. "I walk in and they were fighting over it. Like I was the girl."

Lowe clarified that he saw the costars and close friends wrestling in that instance; he also said he once saw the pair physically fight after Farley accidentally stepped on Spade's turkey sandwich.

"It was like I was the pretty girl, they were very possessive," he added of Spade and Farley's fights. "Absolutely true. 'I was in the jacuzzi.' So insane."

Lowe appeared in the 1995 comedy Tommy Boy as Paul Barish, the stepbrother of Farley's character Tommy. The late comedian — Farley died in 1997 at age 33 — starred in the film as a foolish heir to his father's auto parts company, while Spade portrayed another employee tasked with showing him the ropes. The film was one of many classic comedies Farley made during his time on Saturday Night Live in the years before he died of a drug overdose.

"None of us realized the impact that Tommy Boy would have," Lowe said of the film during his appearance on The Rich Eisen Show. "I cannot tell you how much feedback I get [from] Tommy Boy and how happy I am that I was in it because of what it means to people."

"My memories of it are we didn't know what was going on — we had a really really good time," he added. "I remember Farley had a shot of espresso before every take — not every scene, every take."

Season 2 of Unstable premieres August 1 on Netflix.
