Misty, water-colored memories ... of the way he was.
After nearly 60 years on screen, Robert Redford announced Monday that heās retiring from acting following the release of what will be his final film.
Redford, 81, will star in upcoming crime comedy āThe Old Man & The Gunā directed by David Lowery, which hits theaters in September, before hanging his hat up for good.
āNever say never, but I pretty well concluded that this would be it for me in terms of acting, and [Iāll] move towards retirement after this ācause Iāve been doing it since I was 21,ā Redford told Entertainment Weekly exclusively in an article published Monday. āI thought, Well, thatās enough. And why not go out with something thatās very upbeat and positive?ā
The film about real-life career criminal Forrest Tucker played by Redford also stars Elisabeth Moss, Sissy Spacek, Casey Affleck and Danny Glover.
āTo me, that was a wonderful character to play at this point in my life,ā Redford told the outlet.
The Hollywood legend revealed his designs on retirement two years ago in conversation with his grandson and fellow filmmaker, Dylan Redford. At the time, he was still at work on two films, including āThe Old Man & The Gunā and Netflixās āOur Souls At Nightā co-starring Jane Fonda.
Redford said heād been impatient, which he blamed on āgetting tired of acting,ā citing the grueling schedule of working on a set.
āItās hard for me to sit around and do take after take after take,ā he said. āAt this point in my life, age 80, itād give me more satisfaction because Iām not dependent on anybody. Itās just me, just the way it used to be, and so going back to sketching ā thatās sort of where my head is right now.ā
He added: āIām going to say, āOK, thatās goodbye to all that,ā and then just focus on directing.
Redford has, of course, directed a slew of films, including āOrdinary People,ā āA River Runs Through Itā and āThe Horse Whispererā over his decades-long career. When asked whether he would still direct films, he told EW, āWeāll see about that.ā
The two-time Oscar winner leaves behind a storied legacy on screen, as one of the most famous movie stars of the 1970s and ā80s with roles in āAll the Presidentās Men,ā āButch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,ā and āThe Way We Were.ā
Redford is also the founder of the Sundance Institute and the Sundance Film Festival.
In 2016, President Barack Obama honored him with a Presidential Medal of Freedom for his contributions to the entertainment industry.
