Roger Daltrey recently embarked on a North American solo tour. The legendary frontman of The Who is playing intimate venues on the outing (get tickets here), including a Tuesday (June 18th) gig at the historic Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York.

Singer-guitarist KT Tunstall opened up the evening with a set of originals and cover songs, including a Daltrey-approved version of The Who’s “Acid Queen,” before closing her performance with her 2004 hit “Suddenly I See.”

Shortly before 9 p.m., Daltrey took the stage with a nine-piece backing band, including Who bandmate Pete Townshend’s brother Simon Townshend on guitar and backing vocals. The 80-year-old singer didn’t waste any time making his longtime partner-in-crime’s presence felt, kicking off his set with an inspired cover of Pete’s infectious solo hit “Let My Love Open the Door.”

After dealing with some difficult vocal issues roughly a decade ago, Daltrey’s voice sounded pretty strong at the Capitol Theatre, belting out Who classics like “Who Are You” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” along with solo standouts like “After the Fire” and “Days of Light.”

However, the show was not without its hiccups. The singer experienced some issues with his in-ear monitors throughout the night, resulting in some stops and starts along the way. In fact, he almost gave up on playing “Real Good Looking Boy,” but ended up restarting it and turning it into one of the vocal highlights of the evening.

In addition to Who classics and his own songs, Daltrey also delivered some interesting covers, including two Creedence Clearwater Revival songs — “Born on the Bayou” and “Have You Ever Seen the Rain” — and his first-ever attempt at Paul Simon’s “The Boy in the Bubble.”

The penultimate song of the evening found Daltrey singing one of rock’s greatest anthems, The Who’s “Baba O’Riley.” And while he may not quite hit the song’s big notes like he did 50 years ago, the iconic singer delivered the tune with the emotion and grit that make it a timeless classic.

The evening ended with “Young Man Blues,” a song by jazz artist Mose Allison that The Who famously covered on their 1970 Live at Leeds album.

In between songs, Daltrey also answered a number of questions that were written down by fans prior to the show. Among the revelations was that he thought Quadrophenia was “two or three songs short” of being a masterpiece, and that late Who drummer Keith Moon was the “funniest man” he’d ever known.

Roger Daltrey’s North American solo tour continues through a June 29th show in Highland Park, Illinois, with tickets available here. See our photos of Daltrey’s show at the Capitol Theatre, as well as fan-filmed video and the setlist, below.
