The Who’s Roger Daltrey says the internet is ruining concerts: 'I'm f---ing sick of it'

"There’s no surprises left with concerts these days, ’cause everybody wants to see the setlist."

Sorry setlist trackers — rock icon Roger Daltrey wants to maintain his element of surprise.

Ahead of his upcoming nine-date tour across North America, The Who frontman refused to divulge the details of his setlist during an interview with Billboard, sharing that he’d prefer fans find out the songs after they’re gathered in the venue.

“I’m not gonna talk about songs,” Daltrey told the outlet. “Too many people reveal songs. There’s no surprises left with concerts these days, ’cause everybody wants to see the setlist. I’m f---ing sick of it.”

As Daltrey suggests, there are now entire websites dedicated to tracking the setlist once artists embark on tours. Between those efforts and fans documenting the experience on social media, concertgoers who like staying informed have easy access to the details of upcoming performances.

“The Internet’s ruined the live shows for me,” Daltrey complained. “Who wants to know what’s coming next? People forget about surprises. I can’t stand it.”

As for those who like to know what song is next, in case they need to schedule a bathroom break, Daltrey laughed: "Why not just start to listen to the bloody show in the toilet, then?"

All of that said, Daltrey was willing to reveal a few details about his onstage plans — including one track that fans were likely expecting to hear anyway. The rocker shared that he will perform The Who’s eight minute opus, “Won’t Get Fooled Again”, but with a couple of key changes.

“We don’t use a tape loop for the instrumentation,” Daltrey said. “We do it on real instruments. It just takes it off the rails and gives me more room as a singer.”

On the subject of considering his voice, the rocker also shared that he doesn’t plan to unleash the famous scream featured near the end of the track.

“I’m not gonna do the scream. I’m gonna get the f---ing audience to do the scream,” he said. “I’ve done that scream for 55 years, and I’ve had enough of it."

He added, "I don’t even want to try it now; it’s brutal on the vocal cords. They can do the scream, and I’ll do everything else. I’m more into singing these days. At the age of 80, I think I deserve to be.”

While Daltrey won’t be joined by his fellow The Who member Pete Townshend on this particular outing, he will be accompanied by the guitarists younger brother Simon Townshend. The rest of the band includes violinist Katie Jacoby, vocalist Billy Nicholls, guitarist Doug Boyle, bassist John Hogg, harmonica player Steve Weston, Jody Linscott on percussion, Geraint Watkins on keyboards and accordion and drummer Scott Devours.

Daltrey is kicking off his solo tour in Pennsylvania on Monday.
