'Romeo + Juliet' 20 Years Later: The All-Star Red Carpet Flashback
Twenty years ago this week, millions of teenagers swooned as Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes spoke William Shakespeare’s immortal words of love to one another. Director Baz Luhrmann’s stylish, achingly romantic update of Romeo + Juliet opened at No. 1 at the box office. Danes, who played Juliet, was coming off her breakout role on the TV drama My So-Called Life, while DiCaprio, who played Romeo, was just one year away from his Titanic mega-stardom. Naturally, the beautiful people of ’90s Hollywood turned out for the film’s Los Angeles premiere, mostly in some combination of leather, leopard print, and velvet.
