Why Ronda Rousey couldn’t wear her stormtrooper mask into 'The Force Awakens'

It’s no secret that Ronda Rousey attended the 2015 premiere of Star Wars: The Force Awakens dressed as a stormtrooper, as the former UFC star posted a picture on her Instagram. But on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, Rousey talked about what she left out of the post: the sad reason she was forced to remove the mask before entering the theater.

Rousey explained that she was asked to take her mask off because, in the wake of multiple mass shootings, the policy was no face coverings. It’s not surprising that the theater was concerned. The blockbuster premiered on Dec. 14, 2015, less than two weeks after 14 people were killed in a mass shooting in San Bernardino, Calif., in a year that was tragically full of mass shootings.

Rousey took off her mask just enough so security could see who she was, and they snuck her in the back once the lights were out. But the mask was still prohibited.

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35 on CBS.
