‘Roots’ Night 2: A Story of Perseverance and Love

Superfan

Roots returned Tuesday night for Part 2, and despite being a story full of tragic events, it reminded us of how light can still permeate even the saddest of circumstances. After getting his foot chopped in half, Kunta Kinte was able to find love for the first time since becoming a slave when he woke up and met Bell. The two became close while Bell helped him walk again, and eventually Kunta decided he wanted to marry her. Unfortunately, Kunta got so nervous he had a hard time expressing his love for her, and Bell shut the door in his face. Luckily, Fiddler was there to encourage Kunta to try again, and this time she said yes before he could even finish asking the question.

The two lovebirds got married by Fiddler, and then Bell became pregnant shortly after the wedding, and soon they welcomed a baby girl, Kizzy, into the world. Kunta was hoping for a warrior son, but that didn’t stop him from trying to create a warrior daughter. Kunta taught Kizzy her family history, how to jump onto a horse and ride it bareback, and that anything can be used as a weapon.
