Rudy Giuliani's Unmasking at 'The Masked Singer' Spurred On-Set Protests

Something is rotten over at The Masked Singer. Season 7 of NBC’s hit reality competition show ground to a halt this week when Rudy Giuliani was unmasked as one of the incognito celebrities, causing protests among cast members. According to Deadline, judges Ken Jeong and Robin Thicke walked off the stage in protest when Giuliani was unmasked.

Judges Jenny McCarthy and Nicole Scherzinger remained on stage, Deadline also reported, then Jeong and Thicke eventually returned. According to the outlet's sources, the judges “bantered” with Giuliani, a disbarred promoter of The Big Lie expected to face criminal charges for his role in the January 6 insurrection at the Capitol. And lest you think this is beyond the pale, it’s not The Masked Singer’s first rodeo with disgraced political figures; in 2020, the show faced major backlash when Sarah Palin was unmasked as the bear. Palin called her stint on The Masked Singer “a walking middle finger to the haters.” Palin is now campaigning to have that footage barred from jurors in her defamation case against The New York Times, saying it may cause "unfair prejudice and confusion."

The Masked Singer hasn’t responded to the uproar about Giuliani, short of telling Variety that the production refuses to acknowledge leaks, but we can expect the fallout to extend into next month, when the show premieres on March 9. The theme of the new season is “The Good, The Bad, and The Cuddly,” with contestants split for the first time ever into three groups instead of two. We’ll give you one guess which category Giuliani falls into.

We don’t know what costume Giuliani wore or what song(s) he performed, and if the episode doesn’t make it to air due to the backlash (the jury’s still out on that), we may never know.
