When Ryan Gosling won the Golden Globe tonight, Eva Mendes was not in attendance. However, the La La Land star wanted to make sure his “sweetheart” knew how much he appreciated her.

Gosling, 36, is notoriously private about his relationship with Mendes, 42, but he didn’t shy away from giving her a major shout-out while accepting the award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy

“You don’t get to be up here without standing on the shoulders of a mountain of people, and there’s just no time to thank everyone. I’d just like to try and thank one person properly,” Gosling stated. “While I was dancing and playing piano and having one of the best experiences I’ve ever had on a film, my lady was raising our daughter, pregnant with our second, and trying to help her brother fight his battle with cancer.”

Mendes gave birth to their second daughter, Amada, in April, the same week her brother, Juan Carlos, was laid to rest.

“If she hadn’t taken all that on so I could have this experience, it would surely be someone else up here other than me today,” Gosling said, looking at the camera. “So, sweetheart, thank you. To my daughters, Amada and Esmeralda, I love you. And if I may, I’d like to dedicate this to the memory of her brother, Juan Carlos Mendes.”

Juan Carlos passed away after battling throat cancer. He was 53.

“Losing my brother brought our family closer, and we were already close to begin with,” Mendes revealed to Latina. “So, to just see everybody be there for one another and show up, I feel so lucky to have them. And then they were there for me when Amada was born. We had a funeral service for him, and that same week I had the baby. So it was really, really intense and obviously beyond heartbreaking but also kind of beautiful.”

Gosling told Entertainment Tonight on the red carpet that Eva didn’t attend the Globes because she was “at home with our girls.”

“All the clichés are true,” he said of fatherhood. “It’s a dream. They’re angels, and they have heaven eyes.”

We’re hoping for a Ryan and Eva sighting at the Oscars next month.
