Ryan Murphy may try to reconvene Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story stars Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch to shoot an additional episode or two of the Netflix series, if real-life events dictate a new coda to the imprisoned brothers’ story.

In a Thursday press conference, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón confirmed that prosecutors are reviewing new evidence in the case of Erik and Lyle Menendez, to determine whether they should continue serving life sentences for killing their parents in August 1989.

At the time of their 1993 murder trial, the brothers’ legal teams argued self defense, saying that the defendants feared for their lives after years of abuse at the hands of José and Mary Louise Menendez. Those allegations have come to the fore in recent weeks like never before, due to the ongoing reporting of journalist Robert Rand, whose 2018 chronology, The Menendez Murders: The Shocking Untold Story of the Menendez Family and the Killings that Stunned the Nation, is getting a major update due for release next month; the dramatization of events in Murphy’s Monsters; and an essay that actress and prison reform advocate Kim Kardashian wrote for NBC News after visiting Erik and Lyle in prison.

Speaking with sister site Variety about the Menendez brothers’ possible resentencing, Murphy said that depending on what happens, “I think what I would be interested in doing, if Nicholas and Cooper would agree to do it, is maybe one or two episodes that continue the story.”

Murphy also has acknowledged the sad irony of Erik, for example, criticizing Monsters as a “dishonest portrayal”… that just might wind up playing a small role in the brothers being resentenced.

“We gave them their moment in the court of public opinion. Basically, we did give them a platform,” Murphy told Variety. “I think they can be out of prison by Christmas. I really believe that.”
